Service and Repair Notes Removal Important: Thorough cleanliness must be observed during all work on drive shafts and drive shaft joints, to prevent dirt and dust getting into the joints. Before starting work, always clean the wheel arch, MacPherson strut and other areas around the drive shaft and joints. 1Unfasten the hub centre-nut. 2Lift the car and remove the wheel. 3Remove the hub centre-nut. Push the axle stub back approx. 2 cm (if it pushed further back it can damage the tripod). Use puller 87 91 287 and puller arms 87 91 303 together with tool 87 91 154, puller bracket, the belongs to tool collection for manual gear boxes. 4Remove the steering-swivel member from the MacPherson strut and unfasten the flexible hose from the hose mounting and, if appropriate, also unfasten the ABS sensor and cable. Important: Scrupulously clean the rubber gaiter and the universal joint driver. 5Remove the clamp securing the rubber gaiter on the inner universal joint driver. Pull the universal joint apart and fit the protective cover on the rubber gaiter and universal joint driver. 6Pull out the drive shaft from the hub. Fitting 1Remove existing grease out of the universal joint driver and carefully clean the interior. 2 Pack the universal joint driver with grease, 60 g Mobile K 575 GS. Observe great cleanliness. Line Pressure Check Procedure Tools Required Important: Before performing a line pressure check, verify that the pressure control (PC) solenoid valve is receiving the correct electrical signal from the PCM. Caution: Keep the brakes applied at all times in order to prevent unexpected vehicle motion. Personal injury may result it the vehicle moves unexpectedly. J 21867Universal Pressure Gauge Set 1. Install a Scan Tool. 2. Start the engine and set the parking brake. 3. Check for a stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). 4. Repair the vehicle, if necessary. 5. Check the fluid level. Refer to the Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure. 6. Check the manual linkage for proper adjustment. 7. Turn the engine OFF. Remove the oil pressure test hole plug and install the J 21867. 8. Put the gear selector in PARK range and set the parking brake. 9. Start the engine and allow the engine to warm up at idle Notice: Total test running time should not be longer than two minutes, or else transmission damage could occur. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices. Parts Information 10. Access the PC solenoid valve control test on the Scan Tool. Zoom Sized for Print 11. Increase the PC solenoid as shown actual current from 0.0 to 1.0 amps in 0.1 amp increments. Allow the pressure to stabilize for five seconds after each pressure change. Read the corresponding line pressure on the J 21867. 12. Refer to the Line Pressure specification table. Compare the data to the table. 13. If pressure readings differ greatly from the table, refer to Incorrect Line Pressure. 14. Remove the J 21867. 15. Apply sealant, P/N 12345382 (in Canada, P/N 10953489), to the oil pressure test hole plug. 16. Install the oil pressure test hole plug. Tighten Tighten the oil pressure test hole plug to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

Tie bonnet back in upright position. 3. Disconnect battery earth lead. 4. Remove engine acoustic cover. 5. Release HO2S multiplug from support bracket on LH camshaft cover, disconnect multiplug. 6. Remove bolt securing front pipe to bracket and remove front pipe. Discard gasket. 13. Remove 3 screws securing LH splash shield and remove shield 14. Release HO2S lead from clip on cylinder block. Remove 4 nuts securing exhaust manifold to cylinder head, remove manifold and discard gasket. 15. Drain fluid from IRD. 16. Drain gearbox fluid. 17. FitLRT-54-026 to the RH drive shaft inboard joint. 18. Using a suitable lever, release drive shaft from IRD. 19. With assistance, pull hub outwards and release drive shaft from IRD. CAUTION: Care must be taken not to damage oil seal when removing drive shaft from IRD. CAUTION: To avoid damage to gaiter or joint, do not allow shaft to hang on joint. 20. Remove LRT-54-026 from RH drive shaft inboard joint.
