Clean and check the brake pad mating surfaces in the brake caliper and caliper holder. Check piston dust boot. NOTE: If the dust boot is damaged dirt may have penetrated the cylinder. If this is the case the caliper must be replaced. Checking the brake disc Check brake disc friction surfaces. If the brake disc displays signs of out-of-true, check its lateral run out. Replace the brake disc if it displays signs of heavy wear, variable thickness or similar. NOTE: Minimum disc thickness/replacement limit = 18.0 mm . Engine Lubrication: All Technical Service Bulletins Engine – Knocking or Lifter Noise File In Section: 06 – Engine/Propulsion System Bulletin No.: 02-06-01-038 Date: December, 2002 TECHNICAL Subject: Engine Knock or Lifter Noise (Replace 0-Ring) Models: 2001-2002 Chevrolet Camaro 2001-2003 Chevrolet Corvette 2001-2002 Pontiac Firebird 2002-2003 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT 2000-2003 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe 2001-2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2002-2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 2000-2003 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL 2001-2003 GMC Sierra with 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L or 6.0L V8 Engine (VINs V, T, Z, G, S, N, U – RPOs LR4, LM7, L59, LS1, LS6, LQ9, LQ4) Condition Some customers may comment on an engine tick noise. The distinguishing characteristic of this condition is that it likely will have been present since new, and is typically noticed within the first 161-322 km (100-200 mi). The noise may often be diagnosed as a collapsed lifter . Additionally, the noise may be present at cold start and appear to diminish and then return as the engine warms to operating temperature. This noise is different from other noises that may begin to occur at 3219-4828 km (2000-3000 mi). Cause The 0-ring seal between the oil pump screen and the oil pump may be cut, causing aeration of the oil. Correction

Replacement Procedure: 1. Turn ignition OFF. Remove engine cover and disconnect electrical connector from TP Sensor. 2. Remove two (2) retaining screws from TP Sensor and remove from throttle body. 3. Install new TP Sensor to throttle body. Install retaining screws and hand tighten lightly. Adjustment will be required. Re-install electrical connector to TP Sensor. 4. Install Global Diagnostic System. a. Select “System Option” b. Select “Idle RPM Adjust Mode” c. Apply Parking Brake 5. Select Neutral position and place engine in idle condition with A/C OFF. 6. Remove rubber plug and adjust using instructions provided on screen. Set Base idle between 800~900 rpm Adjust TPS: 7. Using the GDS scan tool, monitor current data using two (2) parameters: • Closed Throttle Position Switch • Throttle Position Voltage Value 8. Open throttle by hand very slowly until idle switch status switches to OFF. Note the TPS voltage value. Voltage:____________________________ 9. Close throttle and record the TPS voltage. oltage:____________________________ Closed throttle voltage should be 30~65mV less than the voltage noted in step eight (8). Adjust TP Sensor and repeat test as required. WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION: 10. Tighten TP Sensor screws as required. Torque is 12~18 inch lbs. Removal Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. Thoroughly clean outside of caliper to prevent dust and dirt from entering inside. Support caliper with a piece of wire to prevent damage to brake hose. Remove 2 caliper bolts and caliper from bracket. Remove pad shims and pads. Using vernier calipers, measure the thickness of each brake pad lining. Measurement does not include pad backing plate thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove pad retainers. Inspection Clean caliper thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks. Check brake disc for damage and cracks. Measure brake pad thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS . If brake pad thickness is less than service limit, replace pads as a set. Installation 1. Install pad retainers. Apply Molykote M77 compound onto pad side of shim. Wipe excess grease off shim. Keep grease off discs and pads. Install brake pads and shims. Install inner pad with its wear indicator facing downward. If you are reusing pads, install in original position. Rotate caliper piston clockwise into cylinder, then align cutout in piston with tab on inner pad by turning piston back. See Fig. 15 . 2. Lubricate boot with rubber grease to avoid twisting. If boot is twisted, back it out and position properly. Install brake caliper. Install and torque caliper bolts to proper specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install brake hose onto suspension arm with mounting bolt. After installation, check for leaks. Pump brake pedal several times to seat pads. Bleed brakes as necessary. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . WARNING: Frequent inhalation of brake pad dust, regardless of material composition, could be hazardous to your health. Avoid breathing dust particles. NEVER use an air hose or brush to clean brush assembly. Use an OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner. NOTE: Engagement of brake may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of brake pedal will restore normal pedal stroke.
