SERVICE PROCEDURE Ford Motor Company now authorizes LOCK-N-STITCH aluminum insert and tool kit as a proper repair procedure. Follow the procedure included in the tool kit for using the tools and inserts. Tool kits and inserts can be ordered from Rotunda by calling 1-800-Rotunda (768- 8632). Choose option two (2), part number 302-00001. NOTE FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS DETERMINED THAT REPAIRS MADE WITH THESE ALUMINUM INSERTS AND LOCK-N-STITCH TOOLS DO NOT AFFECT THE HEAT TRANSFER FUNCTION BETWEEN THE SPARK PLUG AND THE CYLINDER HEAD. NOTE THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT AUTHORIZED AS A FORD WARRANTY REPAIR. FOR VEHICLES WITHIN WARRANTY, REPLACEMENT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD IS RECOMMENDED. CAUTION: If spark plug thread repair is being done in vehicle make sure the piston is 1/3 – 1/2 way down the bore on the down stroke. This will ensure the valves are closed to help reduce contamination and avoid any interference with the core drill. Cleaning and Identifying the Head Type 1. Remove spark plug from a good spark plug hole, chuck the FT5FTCB brush supplied in the kit into a slow speed drill, and clean the bottom of the hole. Note: If procedure is being done in vehicle clean hole using a vacuum cleaner to remove debris . Gauge the spark plug hole using FT5CG Tooling Type Gauge; this is to be used as a comparison when gauging the defective spark plug hole in step number 4. Pull down on the gauge until the snap ring seats against the top of the probe. 2. Perform Steps 2 through 4 to determine cylinder head Type: Cleaning: Identifying: Caution: Do not use the brush to clean the hole after the repair insert has been installed. 3 of 14 3. Push the gauge down into the spark plug well until it seats firmly at the bottom. Make sure that the upper part of the tool is up high enough to allow the gauge to reach the bottom of the hole. Allow the upper alignment bushing to center the tool in the hole. Let the rod float in the upper alignment bushing without tightening the thumb screw. 4. Pull the gauge up out of the well and read the chart on the side of the gauge by comparing the portion of the gauge that is exposed when pushed into the the spark plug hole to determine if the head is Type 1, 2, or 3. Note: the difference between Type 1 and Type 3 is small. Double check to make sure the reading repeats. If your gauge readings are in question remove another spark plug from a good hole and compare gauge readings.

NOTE: Be sure plug threads smoothly into cylinder head and is fully seated. Use a thread chaser if necessary to clean threads in cylinder head. Cross- threading or failing to fully seat spark plug can cause overheating of plug, exhaust blow-by, or thread damage. Follow the recommended torque specifications carefully. Over or under-tightening can also cause severe damage to engine or spark plug. 2. Install the spark plugs to the engine. Tighten: Tighten the spark plugs to 25 N.m (18 lb ft). 3. Install the engine cover and tighten the 4 bolts. Tighten: Tighten the engine cover bolts to 3 N.m (31 lb in).

Removal Both cylinder heads 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information , refer to Section 100-02 . 2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . 3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 4. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section. 5. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 6. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section 303-05 7. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — LH in this section. 8. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — RH in this section. 9. Disconnect the generator electrical connections. 10. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. 11. Remove the bolts and the generator and generator mounting bracket as an assembly. 12. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. 13. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers. 14. Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors. 15. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube fitting. 16. Remove the upper heater coolant hose. 1. Squeeze the heater hose clamp. 2. Remove the heater coolant hose. 17. Remove the lower heater coolant hose and position aside. 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Squeeze the hose clamp. 3. Remove the heater coolant hose and position aside. 18. NOTE: The coolant hose will be removed with the thermostat housing. Move the coolant bypass hose clamp off the water pump outlet. 19. Remove the bolts, the thermostat housing and the bypass hose. 20. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness retainer. 21. Remove the bolts and position the accessory drive bracket aside.22. Detach the wiring harness retainer. 23. Remove the bolt and the oil level indicator tube. 24. Using the special tool, disconnect the LH spark plug wires from the spark plugs. 25. Disconnect the fuel pulse damper vacuum connector. 26. Remove the four bolts and position the fuel supply tube aside. 27. Remove the bolts and the fuel rail and injectors as an assembly.28. NOTE: Mark each of the roller followers to make sure it is installed in its original position during reassembly. Use the special tool to remove the roller followers. 29. Remove the lower radiator hose. 30. Remove the nut and position the A/C tube bracket aside. 31. Using the special tool, set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). RH cylinder head 32. Remove the RH fenderwell splash shield. 33. Remove the RH camshaft chain tensioner.
