DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK – THEFT DETERRENT Test Description The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table. 2: Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition. 5: The presence of DTCs which begin with “U” indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed. 6: The listed DTCs are internal module malfunctions and should be corrected before attempting any other diagnostics. 7: The listed DTCs are battery voltage related malfunctions and should be corrected before attempting any other diagnostics. Certain exhaust system components, including exhaust heat shielding systems, have been installed on some vehicles in our assembly plants in an effort to provide protection against engine compartment and exhaust system temperatures. Subsequent aftermarket installers/manufacturers are responsible for providing thermal protection (e.g. underbody heat shields) for any structure and/or equipment added to the vehicle and should not remove any components or exhaust heat shielding installed on the vehicle by Ford Motor Company. All exposed interior sheet metal of closed structures (e.g. fl oor pan of cab and/or secondary structure, tool boxes, etc.) should be covered with an insulating material capable of protecting vehicle occupants and contents from temperatures potentially up to 700°F. OZONE DEPLETING SUBSTANCE (ODS) OZONE DEPLETING SUBSTANCE (ODS) The Clean Air Act of 1990, Section 611 requires any product (i.e., completed vehicle) containing or manufactured with any Class I Ozone Depleting Substance on, or after May 15,1993 must be identifi ed with a “clearly and conspicuously attached label.” Ford Motor Company has eliminated Class I ODS from its manufacturing processes. All 2006 Ford Truck incomplete vehicles will not have Class I ODS content. Manufacturers, including subsequent stage manufacturers, are required to label their products if the product, including any component (whether manufactured by that manufacturer or not), contains a Class I ODS or if the manufacturer used a Class I ODS in the manufacturing of the product. In the case where Ford Motor Company provides a label saying the incomplete vehicle contains a Class I ODS that information must be placed on the product warning label. (See EPA regulation on wording, placement, size, and combining labels.) In Canada consult the appropriate Provincial or Territorial Ministry of Environment. EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION LABEL To meet United States Environmental Protection Agency regulations, the Important Vehicle Information (tune-up and fuel tank capacity) labels must be affi xed in a location that is readily visible after installation and in such a manner that it cannot be removed without destroying or defacing the label. The label shall not be affi xed to any equipment that is easily detached from the vehicle. When emission control labels are supplied but not attached to the vehicle (i.e., tune-up label or fuel tank label), they must be permanently mounted in a readily visible location to meet the preceding requirements. In addition, whether the label is already affi xed or to be affi xed, no components shall be installed which visibly obscure the label in any way that fails to satisfy the visibility requirements described in the California Emission Control Label Specifications. For Canadian requirements consult Section 1100 8 (1) (d) (i), (ii), & (iii). CALIFORNIA FUEL VAPOR RECOVERY California regulations require that the vehicle fuel systems be designed to accommodate a vapor recovery fueling nozzle including unobstructed access to the fi ll pipe. Fuel fi ller pipes installed per the Figure B on page 15 will comply with the “Specifi cations For Fill Pipes and Openings of Motor Vehicle Fuel Tanks” referenced in Title 13 California Administrative Code provided no part of the aftermarket body, as installed, intrudes within a 254mm [10 in] radius cylinder which has its axis parallel to the ground at point “Z” and extends outward from the Ford Motor Company supplied fuel pipe housing component. The fuel pipe housing component is shown on the referenced fi gures and is attached to the aftermarket body via 4.76 mm [.188 in.] diameter rivets. Fuel fi ller pipes installed using the alternative bracket shown in Figure B, will comply with the above California vapor recovery regulations provided the aftermarket body does not interfere with the access zone as defi ned by the California Air Resources Board, and the areas adjacent to this opening cannot foreseeably damage the nozzle bellows or face plate of nozzles during insertion, latching, disposing or removal

Wheel Hub Removal All vehicles 1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 . 2. NOTE: Caliper is removed for clarity. Position aside the front disc brake caliper and anchor plate (2B292). 1. Remove the two front disc brake caliper anchor plate bolts. 2. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate and position aside. 3. NOTE: Carry out this step for F-250 and F-350 4×4 SRW vehicles. Remove the rotor. 4. NOTE: Carry out this step for DRW vehicles. NOTE: If excessive force must be used during brake rotor removal, the brake rotors should be checked for lateral runout prior to installation. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00 . Remove the eight hub extender nuts, the hub plate and the rotor. 1. Remove the eight hub plate nuts. 2. Remove the hub plate. 3. Remove the rotor. 5. Remove the hub lock. 1. Remove the retainer ring. 2. Pull outward and remove the hub lock. 6. Remove the axle shaft thrust washers. 1. Remove the snap ring. 2. Remove the three thrust washers. Vehicles equipped with ABS 7. sensor from the bearing. Disconnect the ABS wheel sensor harness. 1. Disconnect the connector. 2. Disconnect the harness routing clips. All vehicles 8. NOTE: The wheel hub and bearing is a slip fit design and should not require a puller to remove it. Remove the wheel hub and bearing. 1. Remove the four lock nuts. 2. Remove the wheel hub and bearing 9. If necessary, remove the brake disc shield. Vehicles with ABS 10. If necessary, remove the bolt and the ABS sensor. All vehicles 11. NOTE: If necessary, position the hub in a soft-jawed vise. Install two nuts on the studs and use the inner nut to remove the studs. 12. Remove and discard the O-ring. Installation All vehicles 1. NOTE: Any time the wheel hub is removed for any reason, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of four wheel drive operations. Install a new O-ring. 2. NOTE: Position the hub in a soft-jawed vise. Install two nuts on the studs and use the outer nut to install the studs. Vehicles equipped with ABS 3. Position the ABS sensor and install the bolt. All vehicles 4. Position the brake disc shield. 5. NOTE: Apply a coat of Ford High Temperature 4×4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease E8TZ-19590-A meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C198-A to the O-ring area of the wheel hub and bearing before installing the hub and bearing. Install the wheel hub and bearing. 1. Position the wheel hub and bearing. 2. Install the four lock nuts. Vehicle equipped with ABS 6. NOTE: The following step applies only to vehicles equipped with ABS. Connect the ABS sensor harness. 1. Position the ABS sensor harness and install the routing clips. 2. Connect the harness connector. All vehicles 7. n-metallic thrust washer must be installed between the two metal thrust washers. Failure to do so will cause severe wear to the non-metallic thrust washer, allowing the axle shaft to travel further in and out during torque thrust causing damage to the wheel hub and bearing, the axle shaft end seal and the axle shaft. Install the snap ring. 1. Position the three thrust washers onto the axle shaft. 2. Install the snap ring. 8. NOTE: Any time the hub lock is removed, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of four wheel drive functions. Install a new O-ring. 9. Install the hub lock. 1. Position the hub lock. 2. Install the retainer ring. 10. Position the front disc brake rotor (1125) to the wheel hub (1104). Make sure the wheel hub and the front disc brake rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean. ? Use brake parts cleaner to clean the front disc brake rotor. 11. NOTE: Carry out this step for DRW vehicles only. Install the front wheel hub extender and nuts.

Removal 1. Set the parking brake. 2. Loosen the retaining bolts. 3. Raise the vehicle to the desired working height, keeping the axle parallel with the floor; for additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 4. Release the parking brake. 5. Inspect the seal surface and inner shoulder for scratches and damage. ? Remove all scratches, gouges or galling damage with #600 or finer crocus cloth. Installation 1. NOTE: Clean the spindle thoroughly after removing the rear hub. Coat the spindle with axle lubricant. 2. b bearings must be prelubed prior to installation. Fill the hub cavity with 29.6 ml (1 oz) of SAE 75W-140 High Performance Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A. 3. treme care not to damage the hub g it to contact the spindle during installation. SYSTEM TESTING See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 Fig. Fig. 1: Glow plug system schematic Fig. Fig. 2: Dropping resistor and glow plug relay locations Fig. Fig. 3: Thermo switch location Fig. Fig. 4: Dropping resistor check To test the dropping resistor, check for continuity across the terminals as described in the illustration. If no continuity exists, replace the unit. 1. To test the thermo switch, first remove the switch. Submerge the end of the switch in water and raise the temperature gradually. The switch should be off at 126-140°F (53-60°C) or lower. The switch should be on at 134-145°F (57-63°C) or higher. If not, replace the switch. 2. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION See Figure 5 Fig. Fig. 5: Location of the glow plugs The glow plugs are located under the injection nozzles, and are threaded into the cylinder head. Record the DTC Failure Records. 4. Clear the DTC. 5. Select TCC Brake Switch on the scan tool. 6. Disconnect the TCC brake switch connector. 7. Using the J 35616 connector test adapter kit, install a fused jumper wire between terminals A and B of the TCC brake switch connector. Did the TCC brake switch status change from Open to Closed? — Go to Step 5 Go to Step 3 3 1. Remove the IGN 1 fuse. 2. Inspect the fuse for an open. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
