1996 Toyota Supra A/T TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL

Removal 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove battery, battery tray, air cleaner assembly and air cleaner case. Disconnect throttle valve cable from throttle body. Remove cruise control actuator with mounting bracket from body. 2) Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors and ground cables for transaxle removal. Disconnect shift cable and oil cooler lines at transaxle. Remove shift cable clamp bracket from transaxle. 3) Remove front (radiator side) engine mount shock absorber- to-lower frame assembly bolts. Remove front (radiator side) engine mount-to-lower frame assembly bolts/nuts. Remove starter. 4) Remove front (radiator side) exhaust manifold brace from rear of exhaust manifolds. Brace fits between rear of exhaust manifold and front of transaxle. 5) Remove 4 upper transaxle-to-cylinder block bolts. Support engine with hoist. Steering gear assembly must be supported in place during transaxle removal. Secure steering gear assembly to engine hoist using an attaching strap placed at each end of steering gear assembly. 6) Remove front wheels. Remove front exhaust pipe located between exhaust manifolds and rear exhaust pipe. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in AXLE SHAFTS & TRANSFER CASES section. 7) Disconnect shift control cable from mounting bracket. Remove rear (firewall side) engine mount-to-lower frame assembly bolts/nuts. Remove transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts at driver’s side end of transaxle. 8) Remove stabilizer bar mount bracket-to-lower frame assembly bolts. Remove steering gear assembly-to-lower frame assembly bolts/nuts. Support lower frame assembly with floor jack. Lower frame assembly is located below engine and transaxle. 9) Disconnect power steering reservoir pipe mounting brackets from lower frame assembly. Remove bolts for each fender liner from lower frame assembly. Remove lower frame assembly mounting brackets. Lower frame assembly mounting brackets are located on front and rear of lower frame assembly and attach lower frame assembly to body. Remove lower frame assembly. 10) Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove torque converter cover from front of transaxle. Remove torque converter bolts. Remove remaining exhaust manifold support brace. Remove remaining transaxle-to-cylinder block bolts. Lower transaxle from vehicle.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION WARNING: To prevent air bag deployment, disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on vehicle. CAMRY Removal & Installation 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner case with air intake hose. Remove cruise control actuator. Remove clutch release cylinder with hose attached and secure aside. 2) Remove starter. Disconnect necessary ground straps, electrical connections and control cables from transaxle. Remove upper transaxle mounting bolts from cylinder block. 3) Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove lower engine covers. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in AXLE SHAFTS & TRANSFER CASES section. Remove stabilizer bar mount and bushing from crossmember. 4) Support steering gear so steering gear remains in place. Remove steering gear-to-crossmember bolts and nuts. Remove front exhaust pipe, located below oil pan. Remove stiffener plates, located between cylinder block and transaxle, at rear of oil pan. 5) Support engine with hoist. Remove front (exhaust manifold side) engine mount-to-crossmember bolts and nuts. Remove rear (intake manifold side) engine mount-to-crossmember nuts. 6) Using transmission jack, slightly raise transaxle to remove weight from engine mounts. Remove transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts and transaxle mount-to-crossmember nuts. Disconnect necessary pipes and clamps from crossmember. Remove bolts, nuts and crossmember, located below engine and transaxle. 7) Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove remaining transaxle mounting bolts. Slightly lower engine and remove transaxle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. WARNING: To prevent air bag deployment, disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on vehicle

Subject: ATA SOLENOID DIAGNOSTIC CODES P0740, P0741, P0742, P0743, P0746, P0748, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765, P0770 This TSB supersedes TSB # 05-40-006 to include DTC descriptions in Step 10. DESCRIPTION: Incorrect operation of the transaxle solenoids may result in the following three symptoms: REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Check Engine Light illuminated 2. Transaxle held in 3rd gear “Fail-safe” 3. Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0740, P0741, P0742, P0743, P0746, P0748, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765 or P0770 set. NOTE: Do NOT replace the transaxle for solenoid codes listed as open/short. Instead, follow the repair procedure shown below. 1. Using a Hi-Scan Pro, check for DTC in both the “Engine” and “Automatic Transaxle” menus. Record the DTC and description. 2. From the Hi-Scan Pro, select: ^”Hyundai Diagnosis” menu ^”Vehicle ^”Auto Transaxle” menu ^”Actuation Test” ^Press the F1 button (STRI) and test the LR, UD, 2ND, OD, DCC and FSV solenoid (if applicable). Monitor the Hi-Scan and listen for a solenoid sound from the engine compartment. ^If Hi-Scan shows: ^”TEST FAILURE” and no solenoid sound is heard, go to Step 3. ^”COMPLETED” and solenoid sound is heard, the wiring between the PCM/TCM has no open or short circuits. Go to Step 5. 3. Visually check the wiring harness between the TCM and transaxle for a damaged wire or a short circuit to ground. Disconnect the connectors to the solenoids at the transaxle and the PCM/TCM and check for a bent pin or a pin not fully inserted into the connector. If so, repair or replace the ECM control harness, P/N 914XX-XXXXX 4. Check the harness inside the transaxle oil pan for a short circuit to ground. Replace the harness if damage is found or if three or more solenoid DTCs are found in Step 1. (Refer to TSB # 04-40-015 for instructions). Zoom Sized for Print 5. Vehicle Level Transmission and Drivetrain Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Shift Linkage Shift Cable Service and Repair Floor Shift Automatic Transmission GEAR SHIFT CABLE – FLOOR / REMOVAL 1. Using suitable size allen wrench, remove the shift handle retaining screw (Fig. 251). 2. Remove shift handle from shifter assy. 3. Remove console bezel from vehicle 5. Remove retaining clip from shift cable conduit bracket (Fig. 253). 6. Disconnect shifter cable from cable attach stud (pin) (Fig. 253). 7. Remove cable from center console routing. Leave flat on floor for ease of removal. 8. Raise hood. Remove gearshift cable from throttle/gearshift cable bracket (Fig. 254) 9. Unseat cable grommet at firewall and remove cable from interior of vehicle (Fig. 255). 10. Raise vehicle on hoist and disconnect fill tube bracket from transaxle. Rotate fill tube to gain access to shift cable clamp. 11. Remove cable from routing bracket (Fig. 256) 12. Remove cable-to-transaxle nut and slide cable off of stud (Fig. 255). 13. Disconnect shifter cable from shift lever assembly at transaxle (Fig. 255). 14. Remove cable from underneath vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Make sure transaxle shift lever is in “Park.” This is the most rearward position. Verify park sprag is fully engaged by rotating either a tire or an axle shaft . 2. Position cable in vehicle and connect cable end to the transaxle shift lever (Fig. 255). 3. Verify that the washer (Fig. 255) is still in place on the cable mounting stud. Install cable to transaxle and tighten nut to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). 4. Rotate fill tube to original location. Install and tighten fill tube bracket bolt. 5. Install cable “push pin” into bracket as shown in (Fig. 254)

Removal All vehicles 1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to DRAINING . 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 3. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 4. Remove the 4 transaxle roll restrictor cross brace bolts 5. Remove the bolt and the transaxle roll restrictor cross brace. 6. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve tube from the upper intake manifold and detach the retainer. 7. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV), brake booster and vacuum harness tubes from the upper intake manifold. 8. Detach the fuel tube retainer from the upper intake manifold. 9. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module electrical connector and vacuum tube. 10. Detach the vacuum tube from the upper intake manifold vacuum tube retainer. 11. Disconnect the EGR system module tube from the EGR system module. Early build 12. Disconnect and plug the throttle body and PCV coolant hoses. Late build 13. Disconnect and plug the 2 PCV coolant hoses. All vehicles 14. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector. 15. If equipped, remove and discard the 4 upper-to-lower intake manifold screws. 16. Remove the 8 bolts and the upper intake manifold. * Remove and discard the gaskets. Installation All vehicles Fig. 4: Identifying Tightening Sequence Of Bolts Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO. NOTE: Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces. Install new gaskets 1. Position the upper intake manifold and install the 8 bolts. * Tighten in the sequence shown to 10 N.m (89 lb-in). 2. Connect the throttle body electrical connector. Late build 3. Connect the 2 PCV coolant hoses. Early build 4. Connect the throttle body and PCV coolant hoses. All vehicle 5. Connect the EGR system module tube to the EGR system module. * Tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft). 6. Attach the vacuum tube to the upper intake manifold vacuum tube retainer. 7. Connect the EGR system module electrical connector and vacuum tube. 8. Attach the fuel tube retainer to the upper intake manifold. 9. Connect the PCV, brake booster and vacuum harness tubes to the upper intake manifold. 10. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve tube to the upper intake manifold and attach the retainer. 11. Clean the 4 transaxle roll restrictor cross brace bolts using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads. 12. Position the transaxle roll restrictor cross brace and install the 4 new bolts. * Tighten to 55 N.m (41 lb-ft). 13. Clean the transaxle roll restrictor cross brace-to-roll restrictor bolt using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads. 14. Install a new transaxle roll restrictor cross brace-to-roll restrictor bolt. * Tighten to 48 N.m (35 lb-ft). 15. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 16. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 17. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

REMOVAL NOTE: The oil pump and valve body are removed as an assembly. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove battery, battery tray, and remote air cleaner. 2. Position supply hoses, vacuum hoses, and wiring away from pump and valve body cover. 3. Remove shift lever. 4. On models equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) , remove splash shield cover, then disconnect brake reservoir hose and cap to prevent contamination. 5. On all models, remove EGR bracket attaching bolts, then install lifting eye. 6. Remove throttle body bracket attaching bolt, install lifting eye, then using suitable equipment support engine. 7. Remove lefthand transaxle mount. 8. Remove transaxle side pan upper attaching bolts. 9. Raise and support vehicle. 10. Remove lefthand front wheel and tire assembly. 11. Remove inner fender cover and position aside, then disconnect ride height sensor. 12. Remove rear transaxle mount attaching bolt. 13. Loosen but do not remove two lefthand subframe attaching bolts. 14. Remove two engine support mount attaching bolts. 15. Remove four lefthand engine support attaching bolts, then remove the engine support. 16. Position suitable drain pan, then remove remaining transaxle side pan attaching bolts and remove pan. 17. Using suitable screwdriver, place manual shift shaft in Park position. 18. Disconnect upper bulkhead electrical connector wiring retainer clip from valve body. 19. Disconnect electrical connectors 20. Remove valve body attaching bolts, then disengage linkage and remove valve body. NOTE: Do not remove oil pump cover attaching bolts. INSTALLATION 1. Install new pump and valve body to chain cover gasket. 2. Slide pump and valve body onto pump shaft. 3. Rotate pump and valve body assembly toward dash panel, then engage manual valve link with manual valve. 4. Slightly rotate pump and valve body assembly to engage oil pump shaft splines with oil pump rotor splines. Valve body should slide flush with chain cover. A suitable 7/8 inch deep well socket on crankshaft pulley may be required for complete engagement. 5. On models less anti-skid, if engagement is not as indicated in step 4, proceed as follows: a. Remove manual valve from valve body. b. Rotate assembly to allow full engagement, up to 360° . c. After full engagement, return assembly to installed position, then install manual valve. REMOVE NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER Remove the 4 nuts and No. 2 cylinder head cover. Torque: 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 inch lbs.) 5. REMOVE BATTERY AND AIR CLEANER CASE ASSEMBLY WITH AIR HOSE 6. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS FROM TRANSAXLE Remove the set bolt of the wire harness clamp. 7. DISCONNECT CONTROL CABLE a. Remove the 2 clips and washers. b. Remove the 2 clips and disconnect the control cables from the transaxle. 8. DISCONNECT CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER a. Remove the set bolt of the clutch line. Torque: 4.9 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 43 inch lbs.) b. Remove the 2 set bolts of the clutch release cylinder. Torque: 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) 9. DISCONNECT GROUND CABLE Remove the set bolt of the ground cable from the engine left mounting bracket. 10. DISCONNECT BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH AND VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CONNECTORS 11. REMOVE 2 TRANSAXLE UPPER SIDE MOUNTING BOLTS Torque: 33 Nm (340 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) 12. REMOVE STARTER SET BOLT Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.) 13. ATTACH ENGINE SLING DEVICE TO ENGINE HANGER Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print a. Remove the bolt. b. Install the 2 No. 1 engine hangers with the bolts in the correct direction. Parts No.: No. 1 engine hanger: 12281-21010 Bolt: 91642-81025 Torque: 40 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.) c. Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers. CAUTION: Do not attempt to hang the engine by hooking the chain to any other part. 14. RAISE VEHICLE CAUTION: Make sure that the vehicle is securely supported. 15. REMOVE LH ENGINE UNDER COVER 16. DRAIN TRANSAXLE OIL Oil grade: API GL-4 or GL-5 Viscosity: SAE 75W-90 Capacity: 1.9 liters (2.0 US qts, 1.7 Imp. qts) Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.) 17. REMOVE RH AND LH FRONT DRIVE SHAFTS 18. REMOVE SUSPENSION MEMBER a. Remove the 2 set nuts and bolt of the engine rear mounting insulator from the suspension member. b. Disconnect the sliding yoke. c. Power steering: Disconnect the pressure feed and return tubes. d. Power steering: Disconnect the tube clamp

1. Look at the BARO PID. Refer to the Barometric Pressure Reference Chart in this article. At sea level, BARO should read about 159 Hz (29.91 in. Hg). As a reference, Denver, Colorado at 1524 meters (5000 ft.) altitude should be about 144 Hz (24.88 in.Hg). Normal learned BARO variability is up to +/- 6 Hz (+/- 2 in. Hg.). If BARO indicates a higher altitude than you are not at (7 or more Hz lower than expected), you may have MAF contamination. If available, Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) has a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor that can be used as a barometric pressure reference. Use “MAP/BARO” test under “Powertrain,” “Testers and Meters.” Ignore the hookup screen. Connect GP2 to the reference MAP on the following screen. 2. On a fully warmed up engine, look at Long Term Fuel Trim at idle, in Neutral, A/C off, (LONGFT1 and/or LONGFT2 PIDs). If it is more negative than -12%, the fuel system has learned lean corrections which may be due to the MAF sensor over-estimating air flow at idle. Note that both Banks 1 and 2 will exhibit negative corrections for 2-bank system. If only one bank of a 2-bank system has negative corrections, the MAF sensor is probably not contaminated. 3. On a fully warmed up engine, look at MAF voltage at idle, in Neutral, A/C off (MAF V PID). If it’s 30% greater than the nominal MAF V voltage listed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Diagnostic Value Reference Charts for your vehicle, or greater than 1.1 volts as a rough guide, the MAF sensor is over-estimating air flow at idle. 4. If at least tow of the previous three steps are true, proceed to disconnect the MAF sensor connector. This puts the vehicle into Failure Mode and Effects Management (FMEM). In FMEM mode, air flow is inferred by using rpm and throttle position instead of reading the MAF sensor. (In addition, the BARO value is reset to a base/unlearned value.) If the lean driveability symptoms go away, the MAF sensor is probably contaminated and should be replaced. If the lean driveability symptoms do not go away, go to the PC/ED Service Manual for the appropriate diagnostics.
