installation Notes NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified. 1. Compress the tensioner plunger, using an edge of a vise. CAUTION: Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result. Do not compress the ratchet assembly. This will damage the ratchet assembly. 2. Use a small screwdriver or pick to push back and hold the ratchet mechanism 3. While holding the ratchet mechanism, push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing. 4. Install a paper clip into the hole in the tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger in during installation. 5. Remove the tensioner from the vise. 7. If the copper links are not visible, mark two links on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks. 8. Loosely install the Camshaft Holding Tools on both camshafts 9. Install the timing chain guides . 10. Rotate the LH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o’clock. Rotate the RH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o’clock. Tighten the Camshaft 11. Position the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Holding Tool. CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise only. Do not rotate past position shown or severe piston and/or valve damage can occur. 12. TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKETS Precaution: Timing Chain Replacement CHAIN GUIDES AND TENSIONER ARMS: Replace these parts if grooving in plastic face is more than 1 mm (0.039 inch) deep. If plastic face is severely grooved or melted, the tensioner lube jet may be clogged. The tensioner should be replaced. REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative cable from battery. 2. Drain cooling system . 3. Remove right and left cylinder head covers. 4. Remove radiator fan shroud. 5. Rotate engine until timing mark on crankshaft damper aligns with TDC mark on timing chain cover (Fig. 132) (# 1 cylinder exhaust stroke) and the camshaft sprocket “V8″ marks are at the 12 o’clock position (Fig. 133). 6. Remove power steering pump. 7. Remove access plugs (2) from left and right cylinder heads for access to chain guide fasteners (Fig. 134). 8. Remove the oil fill housing to gain access to the right side tensioner arm fastener. 9. Remove crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. 10. Collapse and pin primary chain tensioner (Fig. 135). CAUTION: Plate behind left secondary chain tensioner could fall into oil pan . Therefore, cover pan opening. 11. Remove secondary chain tensioners. 12. Remove camshaft position sensor from right cylinder head (Fig. 136). CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage camshaft target wheel. Do not hold target wheel while loosening or tightening camshaft sprocket. Do not place the target wheel near a magnetic source of any kind. A damaged or magnetized target wheel could cause a vehicle no start condition. CAUTION: Do not forcefully rotate the camshafts or crankshaft independently of each other. Damaging intake valve to piston contact will occur. Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected to guard against accidental starter engagement. 13. Remove left and right camshaft sprocket bolts.

1. Relieve the Bi-fuel system fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Pressure Relief—Natural Gas Bi-Fuel System. 2. Raise the vehicle on the hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 3. NOTE: There is an O-ring attached to the drain plug. The O-ring must be replaced each time the drain plug is removed. Remove the drain plug. 4. Install the drain plug. 5. Lower the vehicle. 6. Pressurize the fuel system. WARNING: It is important that your bi-fuel vehicle be correctly maintained by Ford bi-fuel trained personnel. If a concern occurs, it is important that correctly trained personnel diagnose the cause. If a concern relates to the fuel system, correct part replacement is imperative to keep your vehicle operating at normal performance. Bi-fuel components and gasoline specific components are not interchangeable. If your vehicle is not serviced in accordance with bi-fuel service procedures, damage can occur and your warranty may be invalidated. WARNING: Fuel supply lines are always pressurized. When servicing fuel related components, do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or an open flame of any type. Flammable mixtures may be present and can ignite, resulting in personal injury. WARNING: The natural gas fuel system is always pressurized to 655 kPa (95 psi) downstream of the fuel pressure regulator and up to 24821 kPa (3,600 psi) upstream of the fuel pressure regulator. Use care when servicing the fuel system or personal injury can occur. WARNING: The natural gas fuel supply manifold is pressurized to 655 kPa (95 psi). Fuel pressure must be relieved prior to any fuel system service. WARNING: The fuel system pressure must be relieved before any component can be removed. The fuel tanks must be evacuated prior to tank removal. Removal of components without pressure relief or tank evacuation can cause natural gas to escape into the air and cause injury or death.

Timing Drive Components-Timing Belt Removal NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure. 1. Grasp the spark plug boot firmly and with a twisting pulling motion, disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. 2. NOTE: If an original spark plug is reused, install it in the cylinder from which it was removed. New spark plugs can be used in any cylinder. NOTE: Use compressed air to remove any foreign material from the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs. Remove the spark plugs . 3. Remove the valve cover. 4. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector. 5. Remove the timing belt covers. 6. Remove the catalytic converter 7. NOTE: Cylinder No. 1 is at top dead center (TDC) when the keyway is in the 12 o’clock position. Position cylinder No. 1 just prior to TDC. 8. Remove the stud bolt. 9. Install the timing peg. 10. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the timing peg. 11. CAUTION: If the crankshaft timing belt is to be reused, mark the direction of the camshaft timing belt to the rotation of the camshaft prior to removal, or premature wear or failure may occur. Relieve the tension on the timing belt tensioner pulley.


Removal 1. Remove upper radiator crossmember. Disconnect fan assembly connector. Remove fan assembly. Remove drive belts. Using Crankshaft Pulley Holder (8191), hold crankshaft pulley and remove center bolt. Using a 3-jaw puller, remove crankshaft pulley. 2. Remove upper intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove electrical and vacuum harness retaining clips from valve cover studs. Remove ignition coils. Remove valve covers. Remove power steering pump and set aside. Remove drive belt tensioner pulley and bracket. Remove timing chain cover. 3. Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to mark on oil pump housing. Mark on oil pump housing is 60 degrees ATDC of number one cylinder. See Fig. 10
