Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Place wooden block between jack and oil pan, and raise engine slightly. Remove engine mount assembly near timing belt cover. 2. Remove clamp for power steering return hose near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket. See Fig. 1 . Remove power steering and water pump pulleys. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove crankshaft pulley. 3. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket. Remove stub bolt of engine support bracket, and remove center timing belt cover. Remove lower timing belt cover. 4. Ensure camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprocket timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Move tensioner to relieve timing belt tension. Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. See Fig. 1 . 5. Remove plug from left side of cylinder block. Install a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver into the hole against balance shaft. See Fig. 4 . Screwdriver must go in at least 2.36″ (60 mm) or more. If screwdriver will only go in about .79-.98″ (20-25 mm) before striking balance shaft, turn sprocket one revolution and align timing mark. Keep screwdriver in place until timing belt is installed. This ensures balance shaft driven by oil pump sprocket remains in correct position. 6. To remove timing belt “B” (balance shaft belt), hold crankshaft sprocket stationary with a spanner wrench. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using gear puller, remove outer crankshaft sprocket. 7. Remove crankshaft sensing blade (if equipped). See Fig. 5 . Loosen timing belt “B” tensioner bolt. If reusing timing belt “B”, mark direction of belt rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt “B Inspection 1. Inspect timing belts for damaged teeth and cracking. Ensure belts are not contaminated with oil. Check tensioners for free rotation and grease leakage. Replace components if damaged or if grease leakage exists. 2. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Hold timing belt auto tensioner upright. Measure rod protrusion above edge of housing. See Fig. 6 . Length should be .47″ (12 mm). Apply 22-44 lbs. (10-20 kg) of force to end of rod. If auto tensioner rod moves more than 0.39″ (1 mm), replace the auto tensioner.

Timing Belt Replacement TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT Removal Procedure ^ Tools Required -J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit -J 42098 Crank Hub Torx Socket Notice: Failure to follow the described timing belt inspection and maintenance may result in a broken timing belt and cause severe engine damage. 1.Inspect the cold start counter (also called a heavy duty register) with a scan tool. If there are any cold starts (below -28° C or -20° F) visually inspect the timing belt for cracks. It cracks are noted, do not reuse the belt. Replace the belt and clear the cold start counter. If the belt is okay, and is reused, do not clear the cold start counter. 2.Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management. 3.Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement. 4.Remove the timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement. 5.Remove the crankshaft balancer bolts. 6.Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft sprocket. 7.Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) 8.Install the J 42069-10 to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt. 9.Use the J 42098 to carefully turn the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction (clockwise) until the lever of the J 42069-10 firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange. 10.Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Important: Ensure that the crankshaft is not 180 degrees off TDC. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover at this point. If they are not aligned, the engine is 180 degrees off. 11.Install the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 to the camshaft gears. If the J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 do not fit into the teeth of the camshaft gears, it may be necessary to loosen the relevant timing belt idler pulley and turn the cam until the J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 can be inserted. Notice: After timing belt is removed, never turn camshaft and crankshaft independently. If turned, interference may occur among pistons and valves, and parts related to pistons and valves may be damaged. 12.Loosen the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys. Important: Do not remove J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 while the belt is removed. 13.Remove the timing belt. Aligning Timing Marks (2001-02 Montero) Courtesy of MITSUBISHI MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA. Installation (2001-02 Montero) 1. Place auto-tensioner in soft-jawed vise to SLOWLY compress the push rod. If there is a plug at the base of the auto-tensioner body, place flat washer around plug so it will not contact vise jaw. 2. Slowly compress auto-tensioner push rod until holes in push rod and auto-tensioner housing are aligned. Insert a locking pin into the alignment holes. Install auto-tensioner on engine. 3. Ensure all timing marks are still aligned. See Fig. 11 . Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, left bank camshaft sprocket, water pump pulley, right bank camshaft sprocket, and tensioner CAUTION: Never compress the auto-tensioner too fast, or the push rod will be damaged. WARNING: Right bank camshaft can easily turn from applied spring pressure. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767), rotate tensioner pulley against timing belt. Temporarily tighten tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Crankshaft Pulley Spacer (MD998769), turn crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Turn crankshaft 1/4 turn clockwise. Ensure all timing belt marks are still aligned. 5. Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Position tensioner pin holes at bottom of tensioner. Install Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767) on tensioner pulley. See Fig. 12 . Using torque wrench, apply 39 INCH lbs. (4.4 N.m) of torque (counterclockwise direction) to tensioner pulley. Tighten tensioner center bolt to specification while holding tensioner pulley stationary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 6. Remove locking pin from auto-tensioner. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise and align all timing marks. DO NOT rotate counterclockwise. 7. Wait for at least 5 minutes, then check auto-tensioner push rod protrusion. To check push rod protrusion, measure clearance between body of auto-tensioner and bottom of tensioner pulley bracket arm. Clearance should be 0.15-0.20″ (3.8-5.0 mm). If protrusion is not correct, repeat timing belt tensioning procedure. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. 8. Install timing belt covers. See Fig. 10 . Install crankshaft pulley. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install accessory mount assembly on front of engine. See Fig. 13 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedures. See Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 . Adjust drive belts to proper tension. 9. When filling cooling system, use 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Open bleed screw on top of thermostat housing. Slowly fill cooling system until coolant flows out of bleed hole. Install bleed screw. Start engine and run to normal operating temperature. Race engine to 3000 RPM several times. Stop engine. After engine cools, refill radiator and coolant reservoir tank.

REMOVAL 1.Remove upper intake manifold. 2.Remove cylinder head covers, crankshaft damper, and timing chain cover. CAUTION: When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage. Fig. 70 3.Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to mark on oil pump housing (Fig. 70). Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage Fig. 74 4.Remove primary timing chain tensioner from right cylinder head (Fig. 74). 5.Remove camshaft position sensor from left cylinder head (Fig. 69). 6.Remove chain guide access plug from left cylinder head (Fig. 69). NOTE: When camshaft sprocket bolts are removed, the camshafts will rotate in a clockwise direction. 7.Starting with the right camshaft sprocket, remove the sprocket attaching bolts. Remove camshaft damper and sprocket (Fig. 69). 8.Remove left side camshaft sprocket attaching bolts and remove sprocket (Fig. 69). 9.Remove lower chain guide and tensioner arm (Fig. 69). 10.Remove the primary timing chain. INSTALLATION 1.Inspect all sprockets and chain guides. Replace if worn. Refer to Crankshaft Gear/Sprocket, for removal and installation procedures. 2.If removed, install right and left side short chain guides (Fig. 69). Tighten attaching bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) 3.Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to the mark on oil pump housing (Fig. 71). NOTE: Lubricate timing chain and guides with engine oil before installation. 4.Place left side primary chain sprocket onto the chain so that the timing mark is located in-between the two (plated) timing links (Fig. 71). 5.Lower the primary chain with left side sprocket through the left cylinder head opening


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine under cover. 2. Lower vehicle. Remove radiator coolant reservoir, and set aside. Remove electric cooling fan and radiator shroud. 3. On Impreza and Forester, remove accessory drive belt cover. On all models, remove accessory drive belts. 4. Hold crankshaft pulley stationary, and remove crankshaft pulley center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove timing belt covers. 5. Turn crankshaft to align crankshaft and camshaft timing notches with marks on rear timing cover and engine block. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 . On manual transmission models, remove timing belt guide from top of crankshaft pulley. 6. On all models, if reusing old belt, use White paint to mark timing belt in relation to sprocket timing marks. See Fig. 3 . Also mark timing belt direction of travel. On 2000 and newer vehicles, count number of teeth between marks. For correct count, see INSTALLATION MARK MEASUREMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. 7. Remove No. 2 timing belt idler pulley. See Fig. 4 . Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt automatic tensioner with rod facing up.
