If camshaft or camshaft position sensor damage resulting from a bent baffle is identified, repair the damage as necessary. 2. Make sure the vehicle is in “PARK” with the engine idling. 3. Using the right arrow key, toggle the VVTi actuator “ON.” 5. If at this point the vehicle does not run rough and/or stalls when the active test is performed, proceed with Repair Manual P1349 VVTi Fault Isolation Procedure (FIP). If the vehicle does stall and/or runs rough, this indicates the the VVTi control system is operating. Proceed to replace the VVTi actuator following the repair procedures listed on the Technical Information System (TIS): Engine Mechanical Section, Camshaft, Replacement The camshaft timing gear should come in the unlocked position from the factory. If it is difficult to install the camshaft timing gear, the lock pin may be engaged. To disengage the lock pin, apply and hold approximately 20 psi of air pressure at the oil feed hole located 90 degrees clockwise of the oval slot. (See Figure 1.) Once the pin has released, turn the interior assembly counterclockwise. (See black arrow in Figure 1.) B. Put the camshaft timing gear assembly and the camshaft together with the straight pin off the key groove. C. Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly (as shown in Figure 2) while pushing it lightly against the camshaft. Push further at the position where the pin fits into the groove. NOTE: Be sure not to turn the camshaft timing gear to the retard angle side (in the clockwise direction). D. Check that there is no clearance between the end of the camshaft and the camshaft timing gear. E. Tighten the camshaft bolt with the camshaft timing gear fixed. Torque: 54 Nm (551 kgfcm, 40 ftlbf) F. Check that the camshaft timing gear assembly can move to either side and is not locked

1. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector, Fig. 211 2. NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument. Service Check Connector 3. Idle Speed : 800 rpm Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley, Fig. 223 5. Ignition Timing: 10°BTDC at idle Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing. 6. Remove service wire. 7. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed. 8. Ignition Timing: 8°BTDC at idle Check idle speed and adjust if necessary, COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. 9. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine. 10. Timing Belt Removal Notes Fan Shroud Removal & Installation Remove radiator fan upper and lower shrouds. 1. Installing Power Steering Pump And Belt Remove power steering pump drive belt and pump. 2. Disconnect No. 2 and No. 3 air hoses from air pipe. 3. 4. Fan Removal Remove alternator drive belt , cooling fan, belt guide and fan pulley. 5. Remove No. 2 timing belt cover. 6. Fig. 6 Aligning Timing Marks Place No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke by turning the crankshaft pulley and aligning pulley groove with the “0” mark on the No. 1 timing belt cover. Ensure alignment marks on the camshaft timing sprockets and the No. 3 timing belt cover are correctly aligned, Fig. 6. 7. If not, turn the crankshaft pulley one complete revolution. 8. DISCONNECT PS PUMP FROM ENGINE a. Disconnect the 2 PS air hoses from the air intake chamber and resonator. b. Remove the bolt holding the PS pressure tube clamp to the frame. c. Remove the drive belt. d. Remove the bolt and nut, and disconnect the PS pump from the engine. 5. w/ A/C: DISCONNECT A/C COMPRESSOR FROM ENGINE a. Disconnect the A/C compressor connector. b. Remove the drive belt. c. Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the A/C compressor from the engine. 6. LOOSEN FAN WITH FLUID COUPLING AND FAN PULLEYS 7. REMOVE DRIVE BELT FOR GENERATOR 8. REMOVE NO.2 FAN SHROUD 9. REMOVE FAN WITH FLUID COUPLING AND FAN PULLEYS 10. w/ A/C: REMOVE A/C COMPRESSOR BRACKET Remove the 5 bolts and A/C compressor bracket. 11. DISCONNECT UPPER RADIATOR HOSE 12. REMOVE NO.2 TIMING BELT COVER a. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector from the No. 2 timing belt cover. b. Disconnect the 4 high-tension cord clamps from the No. 2 timing belt cover. c. Remove the 6 bolts and timing belt cover. 13. REMOVE FAN BRACKET a. Remove the nut and PS pump adjusting strut. b. Remove the bolt, nut and fan bracket. 14. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER AT TDC/COMPRESSION a. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with timing mark “0″ of the No. 1 timing belt cover. b. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and No. 3 timing belt cover are aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft pulley 1 revolution (360°) . HINT: When re-using timing belt: Place the matchmarks on the timing belt and camshaft timing pulleys, and place matchmark on timing belt to match the end of the No. 1 timing belt cover. 15. REMOVE TIMING BELT TENSIONER Alternately loosen the 2 bolts, and remove them, the belt tensioner and dust boot. 16. REMOVE TIMING BELT

The ATF level gauge (dip-stick) has been discontinued, and the ATF inspection method and the oil level inspection method have been changed. This mechanism consists of a refill plug, overflow plug, ATF temperature sensor No.2, and A/T OIL TEMP temperature warning light. ATF Filling procedures using SST (09843-18020): When a large amount of ATF needs to be filled (i.e. after removal and installation of oil pan or torque converter), perform the procedure from step 1. When the small amount of ATF is required (i.e. removal and installation of the oil cooler tube, repair of oil leak), perform the procedure from step 7. 1) Raise the vehicle keeping it level. 2) Remove the refill plug and overflow plug. 3) Fill ATF from the refill plug until it overflows from the overflow plug. 4) Install the overflow plug. 5) Fill the specified amount of ATF determined by procedure and install the refill plug. Example 6) Lower the vehicle down. 7) Use the SST (09843-18020) to short the terminals Tc and CG of the DLC3 connector: 8) Start the engine and allow it to idle. A/C switch must be turned OFF. 9) Move the shift lever slowly through each of the positions from the P to the L position, and move it back to the P position. 10) Move the shift lever from the D position, and quickly move then back and forth between N and D (once per less than 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate the oil temperature detection mode. Standard: The A/T OIL TEMP warning light remains illuminated for 2 seconds and it goes off. 11) Return the shift lever to the P position and disconnect the terminal Tc. 12) Idle the engine to raise the oil temperature. 13) Immediately after the ATF OIL TEMP warning light turns on, lift the vehicle up. The A/T OIL TEMP warning light will indicate the ATF temperature according to the following table. (Insert table here) 14) Remove the overflow plug and adjust oil quantity. If the ATF overflows, go to step 17, and if the ATF does not overflow, go to step 15. 15) Remove the refill plug. 16) Fill ATF to the refill plug until it flows out from the overflow plug. 17) When the ATF flow slows to a trickle, install the overflow plug. 18) Install the refill plug (only if the refill plug has been removed). 19) Lower the vehicle down. 20) Turn the ignition switch OFF to stop the engine. The installation of this accessory should follow approved guidelines to ensure a quality installation. These guidelines can be found in the “Accessory Installation Practices” document. This document covers such items as:- • Vehicle Protection (use of covers and blankets, cleaning chemicals, etc.). • Safety (eye protection, rechecking torque procedure, etc.). • Vehicle Disassembly/Reassembly (panel removal, part storage, etc.). • Electrical Component Visassembly/Reassembly (battery disconnection, connector removal, etc.). Please see your Toyota dealer for a copy of this document. 1. Vehicle Disassembly. (a) Remove the negative battery cable. (Fig. 1-1) (1) Protect the fender before starting. (2) Do not touch the positive terminal with any tool removing the cable. (b) Remove the glove box under-dash cover. (Fig. 1-2) (c) Remove the passenger’s step cover. (Fig. 1-4) (1) Remove one nut securing the cowl cover. (e) Remove one screw and one bolt from the glove box assembly. (Fig. 1-5) (f) Remove the glove box assembly. (Fig. 1-6) (1) Open the glove box door and remove three screws securing the glove box assembly. (2) Disconnect the trunk opener cancel switch from the glove box assembly if equipped. For vehicles with Smart Entry, the disassembly process ends on Step f. Go to Section 5. For vehicles without Smart Entry, continue the disassembly process. FOR VEHICLES WITHOUT SMART ENTRY SYSTEM ONLY. (Step g) NOTE: Do not perform this step if the vehicle has Smart Entry. (g) Remove the driver’s step cover. (Steps h-l) NOTE: Do not perform this step if the vehicle has Smart Entry. (h) Remove the driver’s cowl cover. (Fig. 1-8) (1) Remove the one nut securing the cowl cover. (i) Remove the hood release cable. (Fig. 1-9) (1) Do not bend the hood release cable. (j) Open the screw cover on the lower dash cover. Insert the tip of a Nylon Panel Removal Tool in the upper slot to loosen it. (Fig. 1-9) (1) Remove one screw and one bolt securing the lower dash cover. (k) Remove the lower dash cover. (Fig. 1-10) (1) Disconnect the temperature sensor (connector and aspirator hose) from the lower dash cover if equipped. (l) Carefully remove the driver side airbag assembly. (Fig. 1-11) (1) Remove four bolts securing the driver side airbag assembly. (2) Be careful not to get cut by the sharp metal edges. (3) Do not disconnect the airbag assembly. (4) Use the empty V4 kit box to support the airbag assembly on the floor
