PRE-INSTALLATION PROCEDURE General Motors vehicles came with many different engine and transmission combinations. This section is intended to verify that all the correct components are in place prior to installation. If the vehicle is currently equipped with a small block Chevrolet V8, then the engine isolator for the current application will work with the Edelbrock Adaptor plates. See the next page for further notes on various applications. A-BODY APPLICATIONS: 1964 – 1967: Vehicles that are being converted from six cylinder or a non-Chevrolet engine can use engine frame stands for the 283 to 327 from a salvage yard or reproduction suppliers such as OPGI and Yearone; engine isolators can be of the OEM rubber type from a parts supplier or polyurethane safety mounts from Energy Suspension: part #3.1114 (zinc plated), or #3.1115 (chrome). 1964 – 1967 applications will require mildly slotting the engine frame stand mounting holes, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. FIGURE 1 FIGURE 2 – 1968 – 1972: From 1968 to 1972, Chevrolet used two different frame stands with matching engine isolators. Type one is the 307 (and some early 1968 327′s), while type two includes all engines from the later 1968 327′s through to the 454, encompassing all engine sizes in-between. If you have obtained frame stands from another vehicle, use the following procedure to identify your mount system: measure the ears of the engine isolator where the engine mounting bolt goes, the inside dimension is 2 5/8″for the 307 cid (Figure 3) and 2 3/8″for the larger sized engine (Figure 4). Frame stands for the late 327,350 to 454 are also available from reproduction suppliers such as OPGI and Yearone, engine isolators can be of the OEM rubber type from a parts supplier or polyurethane safety mounts from Energy Suspension: part #3.1114 (zinc plated) #3.1115 (chrome) for the 307, part #3.1117 (zinc plated) or #3.1118 (chrome) for the late 327 to the 454. There are a variety of styles depending on engine size and model year, so get the engine isolators and frame stands which are available from reproduction suppliers such as Classic Industries and Yearone. Engine isolators can be of the OEM rubber type from a parts supplier or polyurethane safety mounts from Energy Suspension. There are two basic types of engine isolators; to identify them measure the distance between the tab for the engine mount through bolt, if it is 2-5/8″use Energy Suspension #3.1114 (zinc plated) #3.1115 (chrome), if the distance is 2-3/8″use #3.1117 (zinc plated) #3.1118 (chrome).

Remove oxygen sensor wire connector & clamp. Remove exhaust manifold & drain coolant. Remove installation hole cover & 2 studs. Remove original silicone sealant from hole. Clean hole surfaces. Secure heater in position with the bracket, bolts & lock washers provided. Connect cordset. Route cordset through opening between right side of bumper & engine under-cover. For Avalon, route cordset through opening beside right side of radiator and under right headlight. Secure cordset to the A/C suction pipe. Replace engine components removed earlier. Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 . 2. WARNING: Fuel supply lines will remain pressurized for long periods of time after engine shut down. This pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines or fuel system components. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . 3. Remove the engine air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 4. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, refer to Timing Drive Components—Timing Belt in this section. 5. Remove the vacuum hoses at the: * positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve (6A666). * throttle body (9E926). * intake manifold (9424). * fuel pressure sensor. 6. Disconnect the fuel charging wiring (9D930) electrical connectors at main engine connector. 7. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. 8. Disconnect the fuel line. For additional information, refer to Section 303-04 . 9. Remove the power steering pump (3A674) and bracket as an assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02 . 10. Remove the generator (GEN). For additional information, refer to Section 414-02 . 11. Remove the oil level indicator tube (6754). For additional information, refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube in this section. 12. Disconnect the heater hoses. For additional information, refer to Section 412-02 . 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the thermostat housing water hose connection. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 15. Remove the camshafts (6250). For additional information, refer to Camshaft in this section. 16. Remove the ignition coil (12029) and bracket. For additional information, refer to Section 303-07 . 17. Remove the water thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 18. Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector. 19. Remove the generator bracket-to-cylinder head bolt. 20. Remove the bolts and the cylinder head (6049). 21. Remove the cylinder head gasket and discard. Installation WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury. 1. CAUTION: Do not use abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material; use only plastic manual scrapers. Do not scratch or gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces. Clean all gasket material from the mating surfaces on the cylinder head and cylinder block. Clean out the bolt holes in the cylinder block. Inspect the cylinder head for flatness. For additional information, refer to Section 303-00 . 2. Install a new head gasket on the cylinder block. 3. CAUTION: Do not attempt to install the cylinder head assembly without assistance. Installation of the cylinder head assembly requires two people or possible injury may occur. CAUTION: The bolts are torque-to-yield and must be replaced or engine damage may occur. Tighten the bolts in three stages in the sequence shown. * Stage 1: Tighten the bolts to 15-25 Nm (12-18 lb-ft). * Stage 2: Tighten the bolts to 35-45 Nm (26-33 lb-ft). * Stage 3: Tighten the bolts an additional 105 degrees. 4. Install the generator bracket-to-cylinder head bolt. * Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). 5. Connect the knock sensor electrical connector. 6. Install the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 7. Install the ignition coil and bracket. For additional information, refer to Section 303-07 . 8. Install the camshafts. For additional information, refer to Camshaft in this section. 9. Connect the upper radiator hose. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 10. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 11. Install the heater hoses. For additional information, refer to Section 412-02 . 12. Install the generator and bracket assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 414-02 . 13. Install the power steering pump and bracket assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02 . 14. Connect the fuel lines. 1. Cover the front seats, floorboards, dash and steering wheel with a clean drop cloth or disposable plastic covers. Note: Always wear eye and hand protection when working with glass. Make sure that you have the right glass and the urethane systems are current. Windshield part numbers are FW02724, FW02723, FW02722 or FW02721. 2. Remove the rearview mirror by loosening the Tork screw using a T-20 Tork screwdriver. Slide the wire-harness trim cover off the headliner. Slide the mirror off the mirror bracket in an upward motion. 3. Disconnect the wire harness from the underside of the hardware with a small flat-tip screwdriver or your fingernails. 4. Remove the windshield-wiper nuts using a wrench or socket. If the nuts are tight, loosen them with a 14-millimeter wrench and then come back with your socket. Move the wiper arm in an up-and-down motion to break it loose from the post, or use a wiper puller. Caution: Wipers can sometimes be hard to remove. To avoid stressing the post, use a wiper puller. The wipers are marked; take note to ensure proper re-installation. 5. Using a No. 2 Phillips-tip screwdriver, remove the two plastic screw inserts on the fasteners located on the outer edge of the cowling corners. Using an outward motion, pull out the rubber piece, and then gently pull the rubber insert from the cowling. 7. With the hood open, push in and pop loose the six plastic tab fasteners using a No. 1 PryBaby tool from the underside. There are three on the passenger’s side and three on the driver’s side, with a guide pin at the center. 8. Remove the two-part cowl by sliding it in an upward-outward motion toward the engine compartment, disengaging the eight underside tabs on the front part of the cowling from the base of the windshield. Tape the hood and fender with molding-retention tape to avoid gnarling or scratching the cowling. Note: When re-installing the cowling, use a No. 1 PryBaby tool to assist in the installation of the cowling onto the bottom of the windshield. 9. If using a cold knife or power tool to cut out the glass, remove the A-pillar trim panels, as the windshield fits close to the pinchweld. 10. Remove the door weatherstrip. 11. Remove the screw covers using a No. 2 PryBaby. 12. Remove the two 10-millimeter bolts hidden beneath the covers using a 10-millimeter socket-wrench driver. Pull the handle loose. 13. Remove the A-pillar trim panels using a door-panel remover or No. 2 PryBaby tool. F or T echnicians Only turb the curtain air-bag harness when removing or re-installing the A-pillar trim panels. Note: Before beginning windshield removal, verify the new windshield is the correct one and the urethanes and primers are current. Never use outdated products as this could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers. Removal 14. Make sure cutting blades are sufficiently sharp. 15. Before cutting out the windshield, remove contaminants from the glass and pinchweld to prevent contact with the urethane. 16. If using a cold knife, use a 3? 4 -inch blade. Cut three sides; then use a long knife or power tool to cut the bottom of the windshield. Note: There are no gravity stops on this windshield. 17. If trying to save the windshield, use an Equalizer with an 8-inch blade. Note: When using any power tool, lubricate the cutting area with water. Spray the top and sides; then make your cuts. 18. After cutting the sides and top, cut out the bottom portion of the glass using an Equalizer Express. Spray the bottom of the windshield with water at least 4-to-5 inches above the urethane on the glass, so the water flows down into the urethane while you make your final cut across the bottom of the windshield. Caution: Never use your head to push, as this could result in back and neck injuries. 19. Take the windshield out of the opening using a set of vacuum cups. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation. Installation 20. After cutting the windshield out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and other debris from the pinchweld. Clean the dashboard. 21. Dry fit the new glass to the opening. Mark your glass using a grease pencil or molding-retention tape. 22. Place your vacuum cups on the windshield in the appropriate location for a one-person set. 23. For driver-side setting of the windshield using a Glass Handler Kit, place the kit’s elbow-setting pad on the driver’s side of the hood area; then lift the windshield from the stand using the vacuum cups. 24. Reach over, place your elbow on the setting pad and set the windshield onto the old urethane. 25. With the windshield resting in the opening, make sure it is in the right spot. 26. Adjust both sides to the correct setting, marking the passenger’s side, then the driver’s side. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation. 27. Follow the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations for installation. 28. Clean the inside of the windshield using a urethane manufacturer-recommended product; follow recommended steps. Note: Do not touch the bonding area of the windshield after cleaning, prepping or priming it. 29. Wear powder-free Nitrile gloves to keep off chemicals. 30. Apply the glass prep and primer, following the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations.

1. Installation Review and Vehicle Preparation. (a) Review the entire instruction instructions provided before beginning the installation (b) Review the parts list/kit contents to ensure that all parts are present before beginning the installation. If any items are missing contact Technical Support at (800) 688-5912 before proceeding. (c) Remove any low-octane fuel from the vehicle. Ensure that ONLY 91 octane or higher unleaded gasoline is used. (d) Place the vehicle onto vehicle hoist. (e) Protect the vehicle with protection blankets over the fenders and front of the vehicle. (f) Disconnect and remove the battery. (g) When draining the cooling system into a clean container in Step 3, save this coolant as it will be reused. CAUTION: To avoid the danger of being burned, do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Thermal expansion will cause the hot engine coolant and steam to blow out from the radiator. (h) All parts that are removed and not reused should be saved for the customer, i.e., “discard” means to save for the customer 2. Cover Removal. (a) Remove the engine V-bank cover by Lifting the front of the cover and pulling away from the firewall (Fig 2-1). Discard these parts. (b) If installed, remove the No. 1 engine under cover (Fig 2-2) by removing the 3 screws and 5 bolts. Save these parts for reuse. 3. Drain Engine Coolant. CAUTION: Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns. (a) Loosen the radiator drain cock plug (Fig. 3-1). (b) Remove the radiator cap. Then drain the coolant from the radiator into a clean container so it can be reused (Fig. 3-1). (c) Loosen the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs (Fig.3-1). Then drain the coolant from the engine and save for reuse. (d) Tighten the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs. Torque: 13 Nm (10 ft lbf) 4. Fan and Shroud Removal. (a) Remove the upper radiator hose. Mark the radiator end of this hose with a marker or tape. This hose will be re-installed inverted and the mark will help identify the ends. (b) Loosen the 4 nuts holding the fluid coupling fan (Figs. 4-1). (c) Remove the fan/generator V-rib belt. Discard this belt as it will be replaced by a new belt. (d) Disconnect the reservoir hose from the upper radiator tank. (e) For vehicles with Trailer Towing System: Detach the claw to open the No. 1 hose clamp on the side of the fan shroud (Fig 4-2). (f) Remove the 2 bolts holding the fan shroud (Figs 4-3). Remove the 4 nuts of the fluid coupling fan, and then remove the shroud together with the coupling fan. Retain these parts for reuse. Temporarily re-install the 4 nuts to keep the pulley in place (reference Fig 4-1). Do not tighten. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the radiator core. It is helpful to protect the radiator core with a piece of cardboard to prevent damage during subsequent steps. 5. Air Cleaner Lower Box Replacement. (a) Remove the air cleaner hose by disconnecting the vacuum and ventilation hoses and loosening the 2 clamps. (Fig 5-1). Discard this hose and clamps
