The PCV system is designed to prevent blow-by gas from escaping to the atmosphere by drawing it directly into the intake manifold. The PCV valve contains a spring-loaded plunger which is lifted in proportion to intake manifold vacuum. Under high vacuum, blow-by is returned directly to the manifold through the breather chamber and PCV valve with fresh air. When intake manifold vacuum decreases (wide open throttle) and vacuum in the air cleaner increases, the PCV valve closes and the blow-by is returned through the cylinder head cover breather hose and into the air cleaner. The PCV valve also acts as a check valve when the engine backfires to prevent crankcase explosion. Fig. 1: PCV system components-1984-87 1.5L engines Fig. 2: PCV system components-1988-91 1.6L engines Fig. 3: PCV system components-1992-95 engines Fig. 4: PCV system components-1984-87 carbureted engines SERVICE Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve For PCV valve removal, refer to Routine Maintenance of this information. 1. Locate the PCV valve. With the engine running at idle, use pliers to pinch the PCV hose between the valve and the intake manifold. It should be possible to hear the spring loaded valve click shut. 2. If no click is heard, remove the valve from the engine but leave it connected to the intake manifold. A hissing sound should be heard and vacuum should be felt at the valve inlet. 3. If no vacuum is felt, remove the valve from the intake manifold hose. The engine should stall or almost stall. This will indicate a stuck valve or clogged hose. Check the breather hose for clogging or leaks and replace any defective parts. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System FUEL INJECTED ENGINES General Information See Figure 3 The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to control emissions measured at the tailpipe. Components included are the EGR valve and controls. The EGR system uses a poppet type valve to regulate the amount of exhaust gas flowing into the intake manifold. The flow path is cast into the cylinder head and does not use any external tubing. A control solenoid valve regulates the amount of vacuum to the EGR valve. A Constant Volume Control (CVC) valve provides a constant amount of vacuum to the control solenoid valve over a wide range of engine vacuum. When servicing or repairing any part of the emissions system, it is absolutely essential to check for any obvious mechanical faults or failures. Remember, a trouble code only indicates which sensor or circuit is affected by the problem. Simple mechanical faults such as a vacuum leak or poor electrical connection can cause a fault code. The EGR valve is not simply open or closed but is modulated by controlling the amount of engine vacuum to the valve diaphragm, up to a maximum of 8 in. Hg of vacuum. The EGR valve has a sensor in the top of the valve that reports valve lift to the ECU (same as ECM, 1992-95). The ECU modulates the position of the control solenoid valve to control the EGR valve lift according to an internal program. Upstream of the control solenoid valve, the CVC provides a constant supply of vacuum so EGR control is precise under all manifold vacuum conditions

Removal Procedure 1. Remove the steering linkage shield. Refer to Steering Linkage Shield Replacement in Steering Linkage. Important: Have a drain pan ready for the engine oil to drain into. 2. Remove the bolt attaching the engine oil cooler lines to the remote (frame mounted) oil filter adapter. 3. Remove and discard the seals. 4. Remove the engine oil cooler line retaining rings from the engine oil cooler line quick connectors at the radiator engine oil cooler inlet and outlet. Follow the next two steps for the proper retaining ring removal procedure. 5. Using a bent-tip screwdriver or equivalent, pull on one of the open ends of the retaining ring in order to rotate the retaining ring. 6. Rotate the retaining ring around the quick connector until the retaining ring is out of position and can be completely removed. Discard the retaining rings. 7. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the quick connectors at the radiator engine oil cooler inlet and outlet. Pull the lines straight out from the connectors. 8. Remove the remote engine oil filter lines support clamp bolt. Important: Have a drain pan ready for the engine oil to drain into. 9. Remove the bolt attaching the remote engine oil filter lines to the remote (frame mounted) engine oil filter adapter. 10. Hold the remote engine oil filter lines below the remote engine oil filter lines (engine mounted) adapter to drain the engine oil. 11. Remove and discard the seals. 12. Remove the bolt attaching the remote engine oil filter lines to the remote engine oil filter lines (engine mounted) adapter. 13. Remove and discard the seals. 14. Clean all of the components in a suitable solvent, and dry them with compressed air. 15. Inspect the fittings, the connectors, the cooler lines, the cooler, the filter lines, and the remote filter adapter for damage, distortion, or restriction. Replace parts as necessary. 16. Flush the engine oil cooler, the engine oil cooler lines, the remote engine oil filter adapter, and the remote engine oil filter lines with the same type of engine oil normally circulating through the engine. Figure 1 – Fittings and Vacuum Port Locations INSTALLATION PROCEDURE BEFORE REMOVING OLD CARBURETOR 1. Determine if the distributor vacuum port is timed (no vacuum at idle) or full (vacuum present at idle). With the engine at operating temperature and idling, pull the vacuum advance hose off of the carburetor and “feel”for vacuum by putting your finger on the vacuum port (See Fig. 2) . If your distributor has timed vacuum advance, you will hook the vacuum hose from the distributor to the passenger side vacuum port on the new carburetor. If it has full vacuum advance, it will be hooked up to the driver side port. 2. The stock steel fuel line must be converted to fuel resistant rubber hose. The stock steel line will not connect to the Performer Series Carburetor. Use Edelbrock Universal Fuel Line Kit #8135. This kit contains a filter, neoprene hose, and fittings to adapt to 5/16″or 3/8″stock steel fuel lines (See Fig. 3) . NOTE: After cutting the steel line, remove sharp edges and clean out any chips. 3. Always use a new fuel filter. Failure to do so will void your warranty. 4. You must use Edelbrock Adapter #2696 or Adapter & Fuel Line Kit #2697 when installing a Performer Series carburetor on a General Motors Quadrajet or Chrysler Thermoquad intake manifold. #2697 includes adapter #2696 and fuel line kit #8135. Do not use an open adapter! (See Fig. 4) 5. You must use Edelbrock Adapter #2732 when installing a Performer Series carburetor on certain Edelbrock intake manifolds. In those applications, install the adapter as shown (See Fig. 5)

Removal 1. Remove the intake manifold cover (A) and ignition coil cover(s) (B). 1999-2001 models: 2002-2004 models: 2. Remove the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) (1999-2001 models) or vacuum hose (A) (2002-2004 models). 3. Transmission Repair 1. Remove the transmission. Refer to the appropriate SI procedure. 2. Disassemble and inspect the transmission. Refer to Unit Repair Automatic Transmission – 4L60-E/4L65-E. Important: Subject: 4L60-E Automatic Transmission/Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder, Water in Transmission (Repair Transmission and Replace Transmission Filler Tube, Level Indicator and Seal) Models: 2004-2005 Buick Rainier 2003-2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Models 2003-2005 GMC Envoy Models 2003-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada 2005 Saab 9-7X with 4.2L In-Line 6 Cylinder Engine (VIN S — RPO LL8) • Visible rust on the transmission fluid level indicator. • Visible water in the oil pan. • A milky white substance inside the pan area. • Spacer plate gaskets that appear to be glued to the spacer plate, valve body or case. • Rust on internal transmission iron/steel components. • Remove the surge tank cap and examine the coolant for signs of contamination with transmission fluid (the coolant will have a milky, not clear appearance). • If the coolant has a normal, clear appearance, the radiator should not be replaced. • The cooler can also be tested by following the Coolant System Leak Test procedure (SI Document ID# 877442). Do NOT replace a radiator without verifying that the transmission oil cooler is leaking. If water or coolant is found in the transmission, the following components MUST be replaced. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator WITH the transmission REMOVED from vehicle. 1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube from the transmission. 2. Replace the transmission fill tube seal, P/N 1259475. 3. Replace the transmission fill tube, P/N 15000220, following the appropriate SI Document for Transmission Installation. 4. Replace the transmission fluid level indicator, P/N 15069769 when appropriate during the transmission installation. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator with the transmission in the vehicle. 1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement (SI Document ID# 1364496). 2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the filler tube. 3. Remove the filler tube nut (2) located on the right side of the engine. 4. Remove the filler tube from the vehicle. Tip It is necessary to remove the two A/C line (suction line / low side of muffler hose) retainers and reposition • Replace all of the rubber type seals. • Replace all of the composition-faced clutch plate assemblies including the band. • Replace all of the nylon parts (Thrust Washers). • Replace the torque converter. • Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter. • Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J 45096. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-07-30- 052C or newer – Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flush and Flow Test Essential Tool J 45096 TransFlow .

Remove the A/C bracket bolt from the engine lift hook. 7. Reposition the A/C line upward. 8. Install the new transmission filler tube, P/N 15000220, into position but NOT into the transmission at this time. 9. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI Document ID# 744862). 10. Remove the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 11. Remove the transmission heat shield from the transmission. 12. Remove the old filler tube seal from the transmission case. 13. Install a new seal, P/N 1259475 into the transmission case. 14. Position the new transmission filler tube into the transmission seal. 15. Install the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 16. Install the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft). 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Install the nut securing the filler tube to the stud. Tighten Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in). 19. Reposition the A/C line into place. 20. Install the A/C line bracket to the oil level indicator tube stud and secure the bracket with the nut. 21. Install the A/C line bracket to the engine lift bracket and secure the A/C bracket with the bolt

1. Based upon stored fault codes for secondary air system, there is little or no flow of secondary air into engine. Typical causes for this issue are failed secondary air pumps and/or secondary air check valves. Secondary air pump should operate under normal circumstances when vehicle is first started to perform system test. Pump will normally be heard running when standing in front right corner of vehicle. 2. The secondary air pump is located in the right front of engine compartment. A secondary air pump relay located in the glove box is controlled by the engine control module and sends power to the secondary air pump. 3. Air pump can be disconnected and supplied with power and ground at pump to verify operation is possible. 4. Check valve on front right of cylinder head can be supplied with vacuum and visually checked for opening of valve. 5. Vacuum line from check valve to operating solenoid should also be inspected for cracks or being disconnected. Vacuum line follows right side of cylinder head to back of cylinder head to the secondary air solenoid located under left rear side of intake manifold. 6. The solenoid should allow vacuum flow to the check valve during vacuum pump operation. The solenoid is controlled directly by the engine control module and receives power during key-on-engine-off. SERVICE PROCEDURE Prior methods of cooler flushing have not obtained the level of cooler cleaning and contaminant removal that is required to prevent repeat repairs. The “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” uses heated Automatic Transmission Fluid ( ATF ) and a pulsating action to loosen system contamination. Previous equipment used solvents to clean & flush coolers, lines and torque- converters. There are 2 issues with this method: Aerosol Solvents should never be used for several reasons. NOTE YOU MUST IDENTIFY THE RETURN COOLER LINE TO START THE BACK FLUSHING PROCEDURE. A quick way to identify the return cooler line (fluid coming out of the cooler and returning to the transmission) is to locate the return cooler line fitting on the transmission case . Refer to the following lists: Rear Wheel Drive ^Residual solvent contamination can cause damage to friction bonding materials within the transmission (Clutches and Bands). ^Lack of fluid heating and agitation prevents this method from completely removing contamination from lines, in-radiator coolers and auxiliary coolers Front Wheel Drive NOTE IF AN IN-LINE FILTER HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN THE COOLER LINE, IT MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE FLUSHING THE COOLER OR COOLER LINES. Purge the cooler and cooler line before flushing: Located on the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” is a fluid transfer and purge valve. This valve can be used to purge the cooler and cooler lines of contaminated fluid before starting the back flush procedure of the fluid cooling system (refer to step 5a of this Service Procedure or Equipment instructions, supplied with the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher”). Flush Procedure -The TOP transmission case filling receives the return line. ^CD4E – The REAR or Pump End transaxle case fitting receives the return line. ^4F27E – The REAR or Cover End transaxle case fitting receives the return line. ^AXOD, AXODE, AX4S, AX4N, 4F50N – The BOTTOM transaxle cooler line fitting receives the return line. 1. Check and top off fluid level of the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” tank with transmission fluid. 2. Allow the fluid in the flusher 15-30 minutes to heat up to 140°F (60°C) before using. 3. Install line adapters into the transmission cooler lines. 4. Attach the flusher’s blue line to the transmission return cooler line quick disconnect. 5. Attach the flusher’s red line to the transmission outlet cooler line quick disconnect. a. Follow equipment instructions, to purge cooler lines and cooler prior to starting flushing procedure (using factory installed purge valve and clear hose on “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher”). 6. Allow the cooling system to back-flush for 10-15 minutes, then flush the cooler in a forward/normal flow direction for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Carbureted Fuel System GENERAL INFORMATION On these vehicles, the engine management system is considered part of the emission control system. The major components include the carburetor(s), feedback control system, the air injection system, a throttle control system and the EGR system. The system consists of sensors and switches that feed information to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which will then operate several solenoid valves to maintain the ideal air/fuel ratio under all conditions. As useful as the tests found in this section are, the first step in repair or service to engine management systems is still to gain as much information as possible about the problem; when and under what conditions it occurs. At highway speed? At idle only? Only under heavy load or hard acceleration? Wet weather? Defining the problem will eliminate many systems from consideration and possibly point to the affected system. Before diving into an extended electrical diagnosis, take the time to review the basics. Check every vacuum line for cracks or leaks. Check every electrical connector for corrosion or loose pins. Quite often, simply unplugging and reconnecting a connector will break up corrosion on the pins and restore the circuit. Watch out for poor grounds, particularly if the car has experienced major bodywork. COMPONENT TESTING Air Injection System The purpose of this system is to supply oxygen to the exhaust stream at a point in the exhaust manifold that is hot enough to burn off some of the hydrocarbon emissions. The main component is an air suction valve. The valve is spring loaded to stay closed, with engine vacuum supplied to a diaphragm that reduces the spring pressure and allows the reeds to open. The ECU regulates the engine vacuum to the diaphragm by operating a solenoid valve. 1. With the engine at normal operating temperature and at idle, remove the air cleaner and listen for a bubbling sound at the air suction port. There should be no sound at idle, meaning the air suction valve is closed. 2. If the noise is heard at the air suction port, disconnect the vacuum hose at the air suction valve and connect a vacuum gauge to the hose. There should be no vacuum. If there is vacuum and the noise stops, the problem is in the control system. If there is no vacuum and the bubbling sound is still there, the air suction valve is defective and must be replaced. 3. To test the valve, draw a vacuum at the air suction valve diaphragm and listen for a bubbling sound at the air suction port. If no sound is heard, the air suction valve or diaphragm is faulty. 1. Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect the vehicle’s negative battery cable. 2. Disconnect the mass air sensor electrical connection. 3. Depress the center pins on the push clips on the radiator core support cover. 4. Remove the radiator core support cover. 5. Unclip the relay and fuse box and move out the way. 6. Loosen and remove the bolt on the radiator core support. 7. Unclip the PWM vacuum switching valve from the air cleaner assembly. 8. Pull to remove the computer fresh air tube. 9. Loosen the clamps on the stock intake tube, then remove the stock intake tube. 10. Remove the two stock rubber hoses from the air cleaner lid. 11. Remove the EVAP OBD canister closed valve vent hose from the hard line. 12. Push back, and pull up to gain access to the bottom of the air cleaner assembly. 13. Remove the vacuum hose from the intake manifold. 14. Disconnect the vacuum switching valve electrical connection. 15. Using a pair of pliers unclip the wire harness from the back of the air cleaner assembly. 16. Disconnect the EVAP OBD canister closed valve electrical connection. 17. Remove the complete air cleaner assembly. 18. Disconnect the PWM vacuum switching valve electrical connection. 19. Remove the stock bracket from the PWM vacuum switching valve. 20. Remove the mass air sensor from the air cleaner assembly. 21. Loosen and remove the EVAP OBD canister closed valve from the air cleaner assembly. 22. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the vacuum switching valve, then remove the vacuum switching valve from the bottom of the air cleaner assembly. 23. Remove the two vent hoses from the EVAP OBD canister closed valve. 24. Install the mass air sensor into the intake tube and secure. 25. Loosen and remove the stock nut on the relay and fuse box support bracket. 26. Install the EVAP OBD canister closed valve assembly into the vehicle and connect the hose to the hard line, then secure the bracket to the relay and fuse box support bracket using the nut removed before
