BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect blower motor resistor harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between all blower motor resistor terminals. If continuity exists between all terminals, go to next step. If continuity does not exist between all terminals, replace faulty blower motor resistor. 2. Check for open or short in circuits between blower motor resistor and heater control panel. Also check for open or short in wire between blower motor resistor and blower motor. BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH 2000 Dakota, 2000 Durango & 2000-01 Ram Pickup 1. Remove Power Distribution Center (PDC) cover. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage at PDC fuse No. 5 (40-amp) on Dakota and Durango; PDC fuse No. 12 (40-amp) on Ram Pickup. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for open in Red wire between battery and underhood PDC. If Red wire is okay, replace underhood PDC. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect heater control panel cable, electrical and vacuum connectors as necessary. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire on Dakota and Durango; Black/Orange on Ram Pickup) and ground. See Fig. 5 . If continuity exists, go to step 4 . 3. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire or Black/Orange wire between heater control panel 2001 Dodge Durango 2000-01 HEATER SYSTEMS’ ‘RWD Trucks & Vans harness connector terminal No. 7 and ground connector located at lower right corner of instrument panel (Dakota and Durango) or behind center of instrument panel (Ram Pickup). 4. Place heater mode control knob to any position except OFF. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel terminal No. 7 and terminals No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 while rotating blower motor switch. See Fig. 5 . 5. If continuity does not exist at any terminal, replace faulty heater control panel. If continuity exists as specified, check for open in circuits between heater control panel and blower motor resistor. Also check for an open in circuit between heater control panel and blower motor. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect heater control panel harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel C3 harness connector terminal “C” (Black wire) and ground. See Fig. 6 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between heater control panel and ground connector located at lower right of steering column. 2. Place heater mode control selector to any position, except OFF. Using DVOM, check for continuity between appropriate terminals of heater control panel, for C3 connector terminals “B” (Violet wire) and “C” (Black wire). If continuity exists through heater control panel, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace faulty heater control panel assembly. 3. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel C3 connector terminal “B” (Violet wire) and C1 connector terminal “E” (Violet wire). See Fig. 6 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Violet wire between heater control panel C3 and C1 connectors.

REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Raise the vehicle on an alignment rack (drive-on lift). 2. Verify the road tires are correctly sized and the tire tread is not excessively worn. Replace any worn tire before proceeding. Any new or old replacement tire should be equal to the original tires that came with the vehicle when it was new. Tire wear is not covered by the vehicle warranty. 3. Set the tire pressure for the FRONT TIRES to the following specification, regardless of the load being carried by the vehicle . Tire Size FRONT Tire Pressure LT235/80R17EorLT245/70R17E 448 Kpa (65 psi) LT265/70R17EorLT285/70R17E 414 Kpa (60 psi) 4. Set the tire pressure for the REAR TIRES as recommended for the vehicle configuration and load that is being carried at the time. Tire Size REAR Tire Pressure LT235/80R17EorLT245/70R17E Refer to the Tire Inflation Chart brochure in the Owners Manual or to the placards located either on the face of the driver’sdoor or on the driver’sside”B”pillar. LT265/70R17EorLT285/70R17E Refer to the Tire Inflation Chart brochure in the Owners Manual or to the placards located either on the face of the driver’sdoor or on the driver’sside”B”pillar. 5. Verify that the steering damper is operating correctly. a. Unbolt the end of the damper at the axle end. b. Cycle the damper rod by hand. c. There should be resistance to motion in both directions of the damper rod. d. Replace the damper if no resistance is present. 6. Verify both outer tie rod ends dustcovers are not worn. a. Attempt to rotate the dustcover by hand. b. If the dustcover on an outer tie rod end can be rotated, or is free and loose, then replace the tie rod (regardless of joint wear). 7. Inspect each outer tie rod end for internal wear. a. Maximum allowed wear (joint travel) fora tie rod end is 1.15 mm (0.045 in.). b. Install a dial indicator to the tie rod end (in-line with the vertical stud of the tie rod end). c. With a pry bar placed between the steering linkage and the axle tube, pry upwards while measuring the amount of joint travel (wear). d. Measure the amount of wear in the other outer tie rod end joint. e. If wear (joint travel) in either outer tie rod end is greater than 1.15 mm (0.045 in.), then replace the worn tie rod end. 8. Verify the torque on each outer tie rod end stud nut. The nut should be tightened to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). 9. Make sure any worn outer tie rod ends have been replaced before proceeding further. 10. Verify all other steering linkage connections are tightened to their torque specifications.

1. Disconnect the speed/timing connector “P9/J9″ (2) . Inspect the connector for the following conditions. * Corrosion * Bent pins * Missing pins * Damaged sockets * Mismating * Broken wires 2. Remove the Speed/timing sensor (1) from the front gear cover. 3. Examine the plastic end of the sensor for signs of wear or contaminants such as metal filings. The plastic end of the speed/timing sensor should have no contaminants and should show no wear (greater than 0.051 mm (0.0020 inch) from the face) . 4. Use a screwdriver to carefully pry the plastic sensor end to the fully extended position (approximately 4.775 mm (0.1880 inch) beyond the metal housing of the sensor). 5. Gently push in on the plastic end of the sensor. The plastic end should be firm. The plastic end should resist movement in the retract direction. If there is no resistance replace the sensor 6. Remove the two bolts (3) and remove the cover (5) from the flywheel housing. This hole is used for engine turning. 7. Put one bolt (3) in the timing bolt location (4) . The timing bolt location is approximately 127 mm to 152 mm (5 inch to 6 inch) above the hole in the flywheel housing for engine turning. I 8. Use 9S-9082 Engine Turning Tool (6) and a 1/2 inch drive ratchet wrench to turn the engine flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation. The normal engine rotation is in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from the flywheel end. Turn the engine flywheel until the timing bolt engages with the threaded hole in the flywheel. Note: Visually check the location of the tooth on the wheel on which the speed/timing sensor is to be positioned. The end of the sensor must be in alignment with a tooth on the wheel and not in alignment with the valley of the wheel. Note: The No. 1 piston must be at either top center of the compression stroke or at top center of the exhaust stroke. 9. Inspect the speed/timing sensor before installation. Use steps 3 through step 6 to inspect the sensor. 10. If the sensor end is not fully extended, use a screwdriver to carefully pry the plastic sensor end to the fully EXTENDED position approximately 4.775 mm (0.1880 inch) beyond the metal housing of the sensor.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. Check the vehicle height from side to side and front to back. This is done by measuring from the ground up to the fender using the hub as a centering point. 2. Apply a thin coat of grease to the polyurethane bushings and insert into each eye of the new front springs. Now apply a thin coat of grease on outside of bushings. This will help you to insert the bushing into the spring mount. 3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support securely with jack stands under the frame behind the front springs, and block the rear wheels. Remove the tires, shocks, u-bolts, and loosen the sway bar bolts. (Caution: the front axle will now be free to move, so support securely on floor jack.) 4. With a floor jack supporting the axle, unbolt each end of leaf springs and remove from both sides. (If new shackle bushings were purchased, grease and install them in the frame at this time.) Install new front springs, part # 8041. When installing the front springs that the fat part of the shim on the bottom of the spring pack should be pointing toward the rear of the vehicle. Notice the tie bolt in the front leaf springs is not in the center of the leaf spring, but there is a long end and short end. Be sure the tie bolts align and fit into the tie bolt holes in the front axle housing. Install and tighten new u-bolts. Torque u-bolts to 75-90 ft.lbs. 6. Install new shocks and tires then lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten spring eyebolts at this time. NOTE: The drag link that goes along side of the frame from the gear box to the bell crank may require slight bending for clearance of the new shock. Bending this drag link will not affect it, but do not kink the bar. 7. Raise the rear of the vehicle. Support securely with jack stands and block the front wheels. Remove the tires, shocks, and u-bolts. (CAUTION: the rear axle will be free to move, so support securely on a floor jack. 8. Apply a thin coat of grease to the polyurethane bushings and insert into each eye of the new rear springs. Now apply a thin coat of grease on outside of bushings. This will help you to insert the bushing into the spring mount. 9. With a floor jack supporting the rear axle, unbolt each end of the rear leaf spring and remove from both sides. EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE SERVICE INFORMATION ^LAMP – “EMISSIONS/CHECK ENGINE” – EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE – SERVICE INFORMATION LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-89 BRONCO 1985-87 BRONCO II 1985-89 ECONOLINE, F- 150, F-250, F-350 1985-88 RANGER 1986-87 AEROSTAR ISSUE: The Emission Maintenance Warning “EMW” module operates a light that is located on the instrument panel. For 1985-87 model year vehicles, the light will display the word “EMISSIONS”. For 1988-89 model year vehicles, the light will display the words “CHECK ENGINE”. When the light is lit, it is indicating that the 60,000 mile emission maintenance should be performed. After the maintenance is performed the EMW module must be reset to zero time. Another type of module is the “IMS” module. This module is not part of the light circuit and does not require maintenance. At a predetermined time, the IMS module directs the EEC IV processor to make a strategy change. A third type of module is the “COMBO” module. This module combines the functions of the IMS and the EMW modules. ACTION: Refer to the following module application charts for the specific vehicle application and location of the different types of modules. Note: Test and adjust lambda control with a lambda control tester. The lambda control and the idle speed emissions level must not be tested when the engine is very hot, e.g. immediately after driving sharply or after measuring engine output on the dynamometer. Note: Not available on model year 1984-1986. 4 Connect testers: oil remote thermometer (018)124 589 07 21 00 lambda control tester (012) twin socket (031) trigger clamp (011) exhaust probe (005)126 589 11 63 00 CO measuring instrument (006) engine tester with oscilloscope (030) multimeter (003) test cable (033)102 589 04 63 00. 5 Position extraction device (014) at exhaust tail pipe. 6 Check engine coolant level, adjust to correct level. 7 Check engine oil level, pay attention to condition of oil (visual inspection). 8 Take off air cleaner. 9 Check ease of movement and condition of throttle control linkage and throttle valve. Grease all bearing points and ball sockets. 10 Check fulcrum lever, adjust. Check whether the roller (15) in the fulcrum lever (13) is resting free of tension against end stop. Adjust fulcrum lever (13) with the connecting rod (2), if necessary, so that the roller (15) is resting free of tension against end stop. 11 Idle stop. Check whether the throttle valve is resting against idle stop. Disconnect connecting rod (2) for this step. Adjust throttle control. Engines with cruise control only. Check whether the actuator is resting against idle stop of cruise control by pressing the lever of the actuator clockwise against idle stop at cruise control. When attaching the connecting rod (21), ensure that the lever of the actuator is lifted approx. 1 mm off the idle stop at the cruise control. Adjust tie rod, if necessary. Adjust throttle control. 12 Check wide open throttle stop from the accelerator pedal , adjust. 13 Voltages Test (battery and ignition coil ): No-load voltage Connect voltmeter to the battery, paying attention to the polarity, and take reading of voltage. Specification: 12.2 volts . Ignition coil Switch on ignition with engine not running. Test the voltage terminal 15 to ground at contact 5 of diagnostic connector. Specification: battery voltage Test difference in voltage between terminal 15 and terminal 1 at contacts 5 and 4 of diagnostic connector. Specification: 0 volts If the specified values are not reached, test

STEP 1: POSITIONING CANISTER Remove the top cover from the canister box and set it aside for later installation. Perform a quick inventory to insure all parts are there. Be sure to check inside the small cardboard box for parts. Remove the Canister from the box and set it in the truck bed against the cab. The canister should be resting on the canister end plates and be centered in the truck bed. DO NOT USE A KNIFE TO OPEN THE RAIL BOX. OPEN THE RAIL BOX ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE BOX AND LIFT RAILS OUT TO AVOID SCRATCHING THE SURFACE OF THE RAILS ON THE PACKAGE STAPLES. CAUTION! Canister End Plates INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Slide the four (4) Inner Rail Clamps (2 on each side) through the Tie Down Bars of the truck. (Figure 2B) Place the Outer Angled Rail Clamps on the Inner Rail Clamps (MAKE SURE THE NARROWER EDGE IS DOWN ON THE OUTER ANGLED RAIL CLAMPS) loosely fasten the clamps in place with the 1/4″ Washer, 1/4″ Lock Washer and Rail Clamp Nut on both sides of the truck bed. The fi rst clamp should be placed about 6 inches from the canister (closest to truck cab). The second clamp assembly should be about 4 inches from the end of the Tie Down Bar (closest to the tailgate). Open the rail box along the length of the box, lift rails out to avoid scratching the rail surface on the package staples. The side rails are marked “left” and “right” (left is the driver’s side of the truck). Then Slide Rail Clamp Bracket A on each Rail followed by Rail Clamp Bracket B. Rail Clamp Bracket A should be closest to the Cab of the truck. At this time you will need to install the taligate end of the pull strap to the underside of the drivers side rail using the #8-32 x 3/4 machine screw that is already located at the tailgate end on the underside of the rail. (Figure 2A) Now, with the tailgate closed, place the side rails in position on the truck bed with the Rail Clamp Brackets A & B resting on the Outer Angled Rail Clamps. Loosely assemble the Rail Clamp Brackets to the Outer Angled Rail Clamps with the 1/4″ Washer, 1/4″ Lock Washer and 1/4-20 x 1/2″ Bolt on each side of the truck bed. Center the Rails in the Truck bed. Check spacing in the truck bed between the Left and Right Rails. Spacing should be 51 3/4″. Once correct spacing is achieved tighten the Rail Clamp Brackets A & B only in place Correct spacing to the tailgate should be 1/16″ to prevent the tailgate from striking the side rails when closing. Tighten the Set Screws on both Rail Clamp Bracket A to hold rails in position. ( Adjust spacing from the tailgate by moving rails forward or backward as needed prior to fi nal tightening of set screws .) Apply downward pressure while tightening the Outer Angled Rail Clamp to the Inner Rail Clamp, especially on the tailgate end. This will ensure a tight seal, fi rm seat, and good fi t on the truck bed

An intermittent may be caused by any of the following conditions: Thoroughly check any circuitry that is suspected of causing the intermittent complaint. Refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections Diagnosis in Wiring Systems. If a repair is necessary, refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems. Test Description The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table. 2. This test checks if communication can be established between the scan tool and the VTD. If the scan tool cannot communicate with the VTD, refer to Diagnostic System Check – Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent. 3. This test checks for any opens in the serial data circuit between the VCM and the VTD. This also checks for any intermittent malfunctions associated with the serial data circuit. 4. This step is to determine if the condition that set the DTC is still present. The engine must be cranked in order to set this DTC. If the condition is present, the engine will start and then stall, indicating the VCM is disabling fuel. 7. Use a scan tool to clear and check for any DTCs in all the modules connected to the Class 2 Serial Data circuit (VCM, VTD, ATC, and BCM). the module itself. After repairing the cause of DTC P1626, clear all DTCs from the systems capable of storing this DTC and DTC U1192. 1 Important: Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool Capture Info to save the Freeze Frame and Failure Records for reference. The control module’s data is deleted once the Clear Info function is used. Did you perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check? — Go to Step 2 Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check 2 1. Install the scan tool. 2. Turn ON the ignition leaving the engine OFF. 3. Attempt to establish communications with the VTD (Passlock) Control Module. Does the scan tool communicate with the VTD (Passlock) Control Module? — Go to Step 3 Go to Diagnostic System Check – Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent 3 Check the Class 2 Serial Data circuit for the following intermittent conditions: Did you find a problem? • An open in the Class 2 Serial Data circuit between the VCM and the VTD (Passlock) Control Module. • A short to ground. • A short to voltage. • Loose or damaged terminals at the DLC, VCM or the VTD (Passlock) Control Module. — Go to Step 6 Go to Step 4 4 1. Turn OFF the ignition. 2. Connect or install any connectors or components that were disconnected or removed. 3. Clear all DTCs using a scan tool. 4. Turn OFF the ignition for 15 seconds. 5. Attempt to start the engine. Does DTC P1626 reset? — Go to Diagnostic System Check – Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent Go to Step 5 5 This DTC is intermittent. Are any additional DTCs stored? — Go to the applicable DTC table Go to Diagnostic Aids 6 Repair the circuit as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems. Is the action complete?
