installation Notes NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified. 1. Compress the tensioner plunger, using an edge of a vise. CAUTION: Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result. Do not compress the ratchet assembly. This will damage the ratchet assembly. 2. Use a small screwdriver or pick to push back and hold the ratchet mechanism 3. While holding the ratchet mechanism, push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing. 4. Install a paper clip into the hole in the tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger in during installation. 5. Remove the tensioner from the vise. 7. If the copper links are not visible, mark two links on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks. 8. Loosely install the Camshaft Holding Tools on both camshafts 9. Install the timing chain guides . 10. Rotate the LH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o’clock. Rotate the RH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o’clock. Tighten the Camshaft 11. Position the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Holding Tool. CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise only. Do not rotate past position shown or severe piston and/or valve damage can occur. 12. 2003 Ford Truck Expedition Suspension – Air Suspension Height Sensor Linkage Loose Service Procedure

ISSUE Some 2003-2006 Expedition and Navigator vehicles equipped with an air suspension may exhibit an air suspension height sensor linkage arm disengaging from the suspension ball stud or height sensor rotating arm. This concern typically occurs with the rear sensor (Figure 1) but may occur with the front sensors as well. If this occurs, the symptom will typically be the vehicle leaning to one side, the vehicle sitting too low/high, a harsh ride, and/or an inoperative air suspension. In addition, this concern may result in diagnostic trouble code (DTC) C1725 (air suspension front pneumatic failure) or C1726 (air suspension rear pneumatic failure). ACTION When a linkage arm becomes disengaged, do not re-attach the arm and do not replace the sensor unless broken. Instead, install a revised linkage arm on all three (3) sensor assemblies, even if they have not detached from the ball stud. 1. Replace linkage arms on all three (3) sensor assemblies following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 204-05. 2. Discard the old linkage arms. NOTE IF THE SENSOR ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR ANY DAMAGE/FAILURE OTHER THAN THE ONE DESCRIBED IN THIS TSB, THE REPLACEMENT ASSEMBLY IS SUPPLIED WITH A NEW STYLE LINKAGE ARM, SO THERE IS NO NEED TO ORDER ADDITIONAL LINKAGES FOR THE SERVICE REPAIR. TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKETS Precaution: Timing Chain Replacement CHAIN GUIDES AND TENSIONER ARMS: Replace these parts if grooving in plastic face is more than 1 mm (0.039 inch) deep. If plastic face is severely grooved or melted, the tensioner lube jet may be clogged. The tensioner should be replaced. REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative cable from battery. 2. Drain cooling system . 3. Remove right and left cylinder head covers. 4. Remove radiator fan shroud. 5. Rotate engine until timing mark on crankshaft damper aligns with TDC mark on timing chain cover (Fig. 132) (# 1 cylinder exhaust stroke) and the camshaft sprocket “V8″ marks are at the 12 o’clock position (Fig. 133). 6. Remove power steering pump. 7. Remove access plugs (2) from left and right cylinder heads for access to chain guide fasteners (Fig. 134). 8. Remove the oil fill housing to gain access to the right side tensioner arm fastener. 9. Remove crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. 10. Collapse and pin primary chain tensioner (Fig. 135). CAUTION: Plate behind left secondary chain tensioner could fall into oil pan . Therefore, cover pan opening. 11. Remove secondary chain tensioners. 12. Remove camshaft position sensor from right cylinder head (Fig. 136). CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage camshaft target wheel. Do not hold target wheel while loosening or tightening camshaft sprocket. Do not place the target wheel near a magnetic source of any kind. A damaged or magnetized target wheel could cause a vehicle no start condition. CAUTION: Do not forcefully rotate the camshafts or crankshaft independently of each other. Damaging intake valve to piston contact will occur. Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected to guard against accidental starter engagement. 13. Remove left and right camshaft sprocket bolts.


Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove right front wheel and splash shield. Put a block of wood between cradle and engine torque strut at bottom front end of engine. See Fig. 2 . 2. Remove mount from upper front end of engine, allowing engine to rest on wood block. Remove accessory drive belt and tensioner. Remove accessory belt idler. Remove cylinder head cover. 3. Replace silicone isolators on cylinder head cover screws if deteriorated. Remove power steering pump (leave hoses attached). Remove A/C compressor (leave hoses attached). Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove right front wheel and splash shield. 4. Remove support bracket between intake manifold and engine block. Remove front balancer/pulley using a 3-jaw puller. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Install Crankshaft Gear Retainer (SA9104E) onto end of crankshaft, with flat side toward crankshaft gear (sprocket). Crankshaft gear retainer holds crankshaft gear in place during removal of front cover. 5. Remove 4 bolts from front end of oil pan. Using RTV Cutter (SA9123E), cut RTV sealant between oil pan and front cover. Spray penetrating oil onto front cover dowel pins. Remove front cover bolts (one bolt is located above accessory drive belt pulley). Pry front cover from engine block. 6. To prevent pistons from hitting valves, turn crankshaft 90 degrees clockwise as viewed from front of engine until timing mark and keyway are aligned with split line of main bearing cap. Remove timing chain tensioner, guides and chain. While using a 7/8″ (21 mm) wrench to keep camshaft(s) from turning, remove camshaft sprocket bolt(s). Remove camshaft sprocket(s). Installation 1. To prevent pistons from hitting valves, ensure timing mark and keyway on crankshaft are aligned with split line of main bearing cap. Install camshaft sprocket(s) with the letters FRT (front) facing away from cylinder head. Use a 7/8″ (21 mm) wrench to keep camshaft(s) from turning. 2. Install and tighten camshaft sprocket bolt(s) to specification. Rotate camshaft(s) until a 3/16″ (4.8 mm) drill bit can be inserted through timing pin hole(s) and into cylinder head. See Fig. 5 or Fig. 6 . 3. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise as viewed from front of engine until timing marks at crankshaft sprocket are aligned. Install timing chain, aligning Silver-plated chain links with timing mark(s) on camshaft sprocket(s) and bottom tooth (or teeth) of crankshaft sprocket. See Fig. 5 or Fig. 6 . 4. Install fixed chain guide. Slack part of chain should be on tensioner side of cylinder block. Chain should be tight against fixed chain guide. Install pivoting chain guide. Retract tensioner plunger, and pin ratchet

1. Remove stock timing cover. Rotate engine to Top Dead Center of cylinder #1 so that the timing marks on the original crank and cam sprockets are directly lined up with each other, i.e. the mark on the crank sprocket will be straight up and the mark on the cam sprocket will be straight down. Using suitable gear puller, remove stock crank and camshaft sprockets and timing chain. Refer to repair manual if necessary for individual steps. 2. Assemble Accu-Drive as shown in Figure 1. 3. Install crank gear with the large inside chamfer toward rear of engine and timing mark toward front of engine. Make certain crankshaft drive key is aligned with keyway of the crank gear before assembling. 4. See Figure 2 “Camshaft Gear Assembly”for correct assembly. (a) Place well-lubricated thrust washer on the rear (block) side of cam gear. (b) The Edelbrock Accu-Drive system is furnished with an 0.032″ thick thrust ring that installs between the back side of the cam gear and the front side of the camshaft thrust plate. Torque the thrust plate retaining capscrews to 9-12 ft./lbs. NOTE: No thrust button is used on Ford engines. (c) Select the desired keyway in the crank gear “0″ (standard), “A” (4ºadvanced at the crank, 2º at the cam), or “R” Place a small amount of clay on the front end of both axles as shown in Figure 3. NOTE: It will be necessary to cut material off rib inside front cover to hold idler gears in place. (b) Install front cover with gasket in place. (c) Remove cover and measure the thickness of the compressed clay. It should be .005″-.030″. Do not tighten cover down until proper clearance has been obtained. Without sufficient clearance, there is risk of cracking the cover when tightened down. (d) If clearance is less than .005, you will need to grind off idler axle as shown to obtain proper clearance. If clearance is greater than .090, replace left side (larger idler side) stud with tapered end axle provided in the kit. Re-install idler assembly and recheck for minimum clearance between block and front cover. 8. With all gears correctly in mesh and timed, tighten the camshaft capscrew to 35 ft./lbs. It would also be a good idea to use Locktite™ or equivalent on the bolt threads prior to final assembly. 9. Lubricate all gears and bearings with engine oil. 10. Re-install the front cover. 11. Re-install all components removed in preparation for step 1
