1999-2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2000-2002 CHEVROLET TAHOE, SUBURBAN 2002 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE 1999-2002 GMC SIERRA 2000-2002 GMC YUKON, YUKON XL LOCATED IN THE SEVERE CORROSION AREAS LISTED BELOW Service Procedure The following procedure provides instructions for repairing a corrosion condition where the front wheel speed sensor mounts on the front wheel bearing assembly. 1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist and support as necessary. 2. Remove both front tires and wheels. 3. Compress the front brake caliper pistons. 3.1. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad. 3.2. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the pistons are pushed completely into the caliper bores. 3.3. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper. Important: It is not necessary to remove the front brake caliper from the bracket when removing the bracket in the next step. 4. Remove the two bolts that attach the front brake caliper mounting brackets to the knuckle. Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic’s wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount, and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak. 5. Remove the brake caliper and bracket as an assembly and support it with heavy mechanic’s wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper. 6. Mark the relationship of the rotor to the bearing hub. 7. If equipped, remove the rotor retaining push nuts from the wheel studs

INTERNAL TCM Circuit Description The TCM is reporting internal errors. Diagnostic Procedure 1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove transmission control relay. Measure resistance between ground and relay ground circuit (Black/Yellow wire) in relay connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. If resistance s not greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. 2. The TCM has an internal problem and must be replaced. P0715: INPUT SPEED SENSOR ERROR Circuit Description DTC P0715 will set if an excessive change in input RPM has been detected in any gear. Possible Causes * Intermittent wiring and connector problems. * Faulty input speed sensor. * Input speed sensor circuits shorted to ground, shorted to voltage, or open. * Faulty TCM. Diagnostic Procedure 1. Place gear selector in “P” position and start engine. Using scan tool, monitor input speed sensor value. If value is less than 400 RPM, go to next step. If value is not less than 400 RPM, go to step 9. 2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Install Transmission Simulator (8333). Turn ignition on. Using transmission simulator, turn rotary knob to middle (1000/3000) position. Turn INPUT/OUTPUT switch on. Using scan tool, monitor input and output speed sensor values. If input speed sensor value is 2950- 3050 RPM and output speed sensor value is 950-1050 RPM, replace input speed sensor. If speed sensor values are not as specified, go to next step. 3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Remove transmission control relay. Using fused jumper wire, jumper fused B+ circuit (Red/White wire) and transmission relay output circuit (Red wire) together at relay connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and input speed sensor signal circuit (Red/Black wire) at TCM harness connector. If voltage is greater than 3 volts, repair circuit for short to voltage. If voltage is not greater than 3 volts, remove jumper wire, install relay and go to next step. 4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect input speed sensor harness connector. Measure resistance of input speed sensor signal circuit (Red/Black wire) between TCM and input speed sensor. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. If resistance is not greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. 5. Measure resistance of input speed sensor ground circuit (Dark Blue/Black wire) between TCM and input

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required Multimeter . Wiring diagram. Test requirements The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 fuses OK. Battery voltage at least 12.5 volts. All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster, switched off. Vehicles with automatic transmission, shift selector lever into position “P” or “N” . A/C switched off. Ground (GND) connections between engine/transmission/chassis OK. Ignition switched off. Test procedure Perform a preliminary check to verify the customers complaint. Refer to Preliminary Check Start diagnosis The Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 detects RPM and reference marks. Without an engine speed signal, the engine will not start. If the engine speed signal fails while the engine is running, the engine will stop immediately Function test Connect the scan tool. Switch the ignition on. Using the scan tool, check the engine speed: End diagnosis and switch ignition off. If the specified value was not obtained: Checking internal resistance Disconnect the gray Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 electrical harness connector 7 arrow 7 . Using a multimeter , check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 terminals 2 to 3 7 see insert 7 for resistance. Specified value: 0.7 to 1000 kOhm Check Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 terminals 1 to 2 and 1 to 3 for short circuits. Specified value: ? (infinity) If any of the specified values are not obtained: Replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 . Refer to Engine Mechanical, Fuel Injection and Ignition 7 Repair Group 13 . If the specified values are obtained: Checking wiring If the manufacturers test box is being used. Perform the following step. Install the test box Adapter F/VAG1598 (68 Pin) VAG1598/22 . Action Taken When the DTC Sets Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC Diagnostic Aids Test Description The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table. 2. This step verifies that the PCM is receiving a signal from the vehicle speed sensor. 3. This step verifies that there are no opens in the circuitry from the vehicle speed sensor to the PCM connector. 7. This step performs a resistance test on the VSS circuits from the PCM connector. • The transmission defaults to 3rd gear. • The PCM inhibits TCC operation. • The PCM illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). • The PCM turns OFF the MIL after three consecutive ignition cycles without a failure reported. • A scan tool can clear the DTC from the PCM history. The PCM clears the DTC from the PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a failure reported. • The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the ignition is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM. • Check for PRNDL DTC P0705. DTC P0705 affects transmission operation. This may set DTC P0502 falsely. • Check for Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) in circuits 400 and 401. EMI may be induced if the harness is routed along the spark plug wires. • Inspect the wiring for poor electrical connections at the PCM. Inspect the wiring at the TCC brake switch. Look for the following conditions: – A bent terminal – A backed out terminal – A damaged terminal – Poor terminal tension – A chafed wire – A broken wire inside the insulation • When diagnosing for an intermittent short or open condition, massage the wiring harness while watching the test equipment for a change. • Ensure that the VSS is securely tightened to the case extension. Removal (Model 194, 8 1/4″ & 1998 Grand Cherokee 216 Axles) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel(s). If equipped with drum brakes, remove brake drum. If equipped with disc brakes, remove brake caliper and rotor. On all models, clean axle housing cover. Loosen cover bolts, and drain oil. Remove cover. 2. Remove differential pinion-shaft lock bolt. Remove pinion shaft from differential. Push in axle. Remove “C” clip from axle at pinion gear. Remove axle from tube. Remove axle shaft seal and bearing from axle tube. Installation 1. Grease bearing, and install into axle tube. Ensure bearing part number is facing outwards. Apply wheel bearing grease to axle shaft seal. Install seal in axle tube. Install axle shaft. 2. Install axle “C” clip. Pull axle out to seat “C” clip. Install pinion shaft. Install lock bolt, and tighten to specification. Apply RTV to axle housing cover. Tighten cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Fill with gear oil. Removal (Model 198, 1999 Grand Cherokee 216 & 226 Axles) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel(s). Remove brake drum. Remove nuts securing axle retainer plate to axle tube, and discard. Using slide hammer and Adapter (6790), remove axle shaft from axle tube. 2. Using a 3/8″ drill bit, drill a shallow hole into bearing retaining ring on axle. DO NOT drill into axle. Using a cold chisel, cut bearing retaining ring across drilled hole, and remove from axle shaft. Using a press and Bearing Remover (1130), remove bearing from axle shaft. Remove seal and retainer plate from axle shaft. Installation 1. Ensure axle shaft retaining plate is flat and not warped. Install retaining plate on axle shaft. Apply wheel bearing grease to axle shaft seal. Install seal on axle shaft. Grease bearing, and install on axle shaft with outer surface groove facing seal. 2. Using press and Bearing Installer (7913), press bearing onto axle shaft. Press NEW bearing retainer ring onto axle shaft. Install axle shaft in axle tube. Tighten NEW axle retainer plate nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. PINION SEAL & YOKE Removal
