ADJUSTMENTS WINDOWS Remove door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Loosen bolts holding window to regulator. Raise window fully, seating window in frame. Tighten bolts. Install door trim panel. TROUBLE SHOOTING POWER WINDOWS On Dakota, inspect circuit breaker No. 20 (20-amp) in junction block. On Durango inspect circuit breaker No. 21 (25-amp) in junction block. On all models, junction block is located on left end of instrument panel. Inspect fuse No. 9 (40-amp on Dakota, 50-amp on Durango) in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in left front corner of engine compartment. Inspect power window system ground circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . SYSTEM TESTS ALL WINDOWS INOPERATIVE Dakota 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver’s front power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 3 (Black wire) at driver power window switch wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between driver power window 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango switch connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . 3. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Tan wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, check driver power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire between driver power window switch connector and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Durango 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. With the key on, the engine off and the coolant level sensor disconnected from the vehicle wiring harness, observe the low coolant light: Subject: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On (Diagnose Low Coolant Level System Operation/Check Sensor for Oil Contamination) Models: 2000-2002 Buick Century, Regal 2000-2001 Chevrolet Lumina 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo 2000-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue • Light is on — Chassis wiring or instrument cluster concern. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

1. Verify that the power steering pump reservoir is full. 2. Verify that the accessory drive belt is in good condition and that the pulleys are not bent or damaged. 3. Verify proper belt tension and operation of the belt tensioner. 4. Check for power steering hose ground out conditions. 5. Check for good engine idle and correct engine RPM. 6. Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Installation 1. Secure the Relay to the wire loom next to the Battery with wire ties. Secure top and bottom with wire ties (see Picture 1). Note: It is suggested to loosen the battery from the base and move it to allow extra working room. Picture 1 2. Attach the ring terminal with 2 black wires to the 10mm ground bolt next to the battery (see picture 2) Run the fog light wire harness on the driver side of the car. Use wire ties as needed Vehicle Disassembly 5. Remove the screws on the lower part of the instrument panel (picture 6) Picture 6 6. Remove lower instrument panel sub assy (picture 6) 7. Mount switch into switch knockout on left side of dash (see picture 9) Picture 9 8. From inside the cabin, locate the wires that were pushed through in step 4. It will be the grommet above the gas pedal (see picture 10) Picture 10 9. Install switch harness (see picture 11) Picture 11 10. Locate the junction box behind the lower instrument panel (picture 12) Picture 12 11. T-tap green/black wire from fog light harness to connector DB pin 16, red wire (bottom pin on right). Connector DB is in the driver’s side junction box, located on the left side of the steering column (pic. 13 & 14) 12. Fuel pump relay is located in the front of the trunk. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to FUEL PUMP RESISTOR (3.5RL) . 2. Turn engine off and ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 12-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 4). 3. Start engine and run at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral, until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle for at least one minute. Turn engine off. Disconnect vacuum hose No. 21 from vacuum manifold. Apply 8-12 in. Hg (27-40 kPa) vacuum to Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Start engine and run at 6500 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 12-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green wire). If less than one volt is present, fuel pump relay circuit is okay. If one volt or more is present, substitute a known good PCM, then recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM. 4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 26-pin and 12-pin connectors. Disconnect fuel pump relay 4-pin connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect fuel pump relay connector terminals No. 2 (Red/White wire) and No. 4 (Green wire). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 12-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, replace fuel pump relay. 5. Remove jumper wire. Measure voltage between ground and fuel pump relay 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Red/White wire). If battery voltage is present, repair open or short in Green wire between PCM and fuel pump relay. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Red/White wire between fuel pump relay and FUEL PUMP fuse No. 22 (20-amp), located in underdash fuse/relay box. FUEL PUMP RESISTOR (3.5RL) 1. Fuel pump resistor is located in the left corner of the trunk. Disconnect fuel pump resistor 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on and measure voltage between ground and fuel pump resistor connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow wire) within 2 seconds. If battery voltage is present for 2 seconds after ignition is turned on, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present as specified, check PGM-FI relay. See PGM- FI MAIN RELAY . 2. Turn ignition off. Using a jumper wire, connect fuel pump resistor connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 2 (Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine does not start, go to next step. If engine starts, replace fuel pump resistor. 3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel unit sub-harness Gray, 10-pin connector located in front of trunk, above fuel pump access panel, next to Gray, 20-pin connector. Turn ignition on and measure voltage between ground and sub-harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black/Yellow wire) within 2 seconds. If battery voltage is present for 2 seconds after ignition is turned on, check fuel pump. If battery voltage is present as specified, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between fuel pump resistor and fuel pump

1. Open the driver side door and lower the window. 2. Remove the door panel, kick panel, and plastic trim piece along the bottom of the door frame. 3. Disconnect the mirror wire harness. Remove the three mirror mounting nuts and remove the mirror housing from the vehicle. 1 2 3 Mirror Replacement – 2 – 4 There is a plug seated in a socket in the center of the mirror that holds the mirror in the mirror housing. Lift up the inboard edge of the mirror. Use a small pry bar and pry up around the center of the mirror until the plug unseats from the socket. 5 There are two drive pins on the bottom and outboard sides of the mirror. Hold the top of the mirror away from the mirror housing and pry away the bottom drive pin from the back of the mirror. 6 Hold the inboard side of the mirror away from the mirror housing and pry away the outboard drive pin from the back of the mirror. IF heated, disconnect OE heater wire from heater terminals. Note: During the removal of the original mirror, if motor pins stay attached to the back plate, use “V” end in small pry bar or needle nose pliers to disengage pins from back plate. Set the mirror aside. 7 8 Using the shorter of the two harnesses from the kit, tape the end without the mating connector to the end of the gopher wire. Remove the foam insulation from the mirror housing sail. Starting from the inside of the mirror housing, guide a piece of gopher wire down alongside the existing factory wire harness and out of the bottom of the mirror housing sail. 9 Pull the gopher wire and wire harness through the mirror housing until about 4 inches of wire remain inside the mirror housing.
13 Tuck the wire harness behind the Signal® mirror. Insert the other drive pin into the outboard pin socket (socket closest to the optic module). Align the socket in the center of the Signal® mirror over the plug on the center of the mirror mount. Align drive pins to its mating slots on the motor mount and vice-versa. Anti-vibration tab should be tucked inside housing. 14 Use the palm of your hand and firmly press down on lower portion (marked boundaries) of the Signal® mirror until it snaps into position. Press down carefully on the mirror outboard edge to engage outboard drive pin into mirror mount socket. 15 Press mirror down carefully on the lower edge to engage the lower drive pin into motor mount. Remount mirror to door, then use Electronic Hand Control to relocate mirror position. Gently clean any finger mark/dirt away from mirror using paper towel and glass cleaner. 10 Guide the Signal® mirror harness along the existing path of the factory wire harness and through the foam insulation. Remove any slack in the wire. Reposition the foam insulation on the mirror housing sail. 11 Connect the Signal® mirror mating connector to the Signal ® mirror harness. If heated , reconnect the heater wires to the heater terminals on the back of the new Signal® mirror. NOTE: There is no polarity so the wires may be interchanged. Disregard heater connections on vehicles not equipped with outside heated mirrors. 12 The drive pins must be aligned before installing the Signal® mirror. If needed, insert a drive pin into the lower socket on the mirror mount. Align the nubs on the lower drive pin so it points to the round plug in the center of the mirror mount.

Grounding the Automobile A perfectly and beautifully wired automobile will nevertheless have bugs and problems if everything is not properly grounded. Do not go to the careful effort of installing a quality wire harness only to neglect proper grounding. Note: The Painless Wire Harness Kit includes no ground wire except the black wire from the two headlamp connectors. You must supply ground wire (14-16 gauge) for all circuits. 6.3.1 Connect a Ground Strap or Cable (2-gauge minimum) from the Negative Battery terminal to the automobile chassis (frame). 6.3.2 Connect a Ground Strap from the Engine to the chassis (even a 10-gauge wire is too small) . DO NOT RELY UPON THE MOTOR MOUNTS TO MAKE THIS CONNECTION . 6.3.3 Connect a Ground Strap from the Engine to the Body. 6.3.4 If you have a fiberglass body you should install a terminal block to ground all your Gauges and Accessories. Ground the Terminal Block with at least a 12-gauge wire to the chassis. 6.4 Terminal Installation and Making Connections Note: In the following steps you will be making the circuit connections. Before you start, you should carefully read Sections 7.0 through 10.0 , as appropriate, and continually refer to Section 10.0 , DOUBLE- CHECKING your routing and length calculations before cutting any wires and making connections. Give special attention to Turn Signal and Ignition Switch connections. These can be somewhat confusing. 6.4.1 Have all needed tools and connectors handy. 6.4.2 Select the correct size terminal for the wire and stud application. 6.4.3 Determine the correct wire length and cut the wire. Remember to allow enough slack in the harness and wires at places where movement could possibly occur, such as automobile body to frame, frame to engine, etc. Double-check your calculations. 6.4.4 Strip insulation away from wire. Strip only enough necessary for the type of terminal lug you are using. Note: In the following step, make sure that the terminal is crimped with the proper die in the crimping tool. An improper crimp will NOT make a good connection. 6.4.5 Crimp the terminal onto the wire. CAUTION: DO NOT OVER-CRIMP! 6.4.6 Connecting the harness throughout the groups is a redundant process. Make sure that each wire is FIRST properly routed and THEN attach. DO NOT ATTACH FIRST THEN ROUTE AFTERWARD. 6.4.7 When all wires are attached, tighten the mounts and ties to secure harness permanently. 6.5 Testing The System 6.5.1 Use a small (10 amp or less) battery charger to power up the vehicle for circuit testing. If there is a problem anywhere, the battery charger’s low amperage and internal circuit breaker will provide circuit protection. CAUTION: IF YOU HAVE NOT YET DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY FROM THE AUTOMOBILE, DO SO NOW! DO NOT CONNECT THE BATTERY CHARGER WITH THE BATTERY CONNECTED. Connect the battery charger’s NEGATIVE output to the automobile chassis or engine block and its POSITIVE output to the automobile’s positive battery terminal. 6.5.2 INDIVIDUALLY turn on each light, ignition, wiper circuit, etc. and check for proper operation. Note: The turn signals will not flash properly if you do not have both the front and rear bulbs installed and connected. 6.5.3 When all circuits check out THEN attach the battery cable to the battery for vehicle operation

Use the locking pick tool from the wire harness repair kit and back out the terminal from the appropriate connector for the DRL Relay or Body ECU. See the Reference Chart on Page 1 of this bulletin for pin and connector information. 3. Insulate the removed terminal using vinyl electrical tape. 4. Secure the wire and terminal to the outside of the wire harness using vinyl electrical tape. NOTE: For the 2000 MY Avalon, proceed to Step 5. For all remaining models, proceed to Step 6. 5. For 2000 model year Avalon: A. Order a new terminal with lead that is the same size and type as the terminal previously removed from the connector. (PN 82998-12690) B. Securely attach a 45 cm/ 18 in wire with an outside diameter of 2.0 mm or larger to the tail of the new terminal. Insert the new terminal with lead into the Body ECU Connector B5, previously vacated by the original terminal. E. Properly attach and route the new wire to the exterior of the existing wire harness in a manner that will not allow it to become damaged or come into contact with any other circuits. F. Securely attach the eyelet to the existing ground point located in the left kick panel area. (Ground Point IF) 6. Check that the Daytime Running Light (DRL) operation has been disabled. 7. Reassemble any interior panels that were removed to gain access to components, connectors, etc.

Record the DTC Failure Records. 4. Clear the DTC. 5. Select TCC Brake Switch on the scan tool. 6. Disconnect the TCC brake switch connector. 7. Using the J 35616 connector test adapter kit, install a fused jumper wire between terminals A and B of the TCC brake switch connector. Did the TCC brake switch status change from Open to Closed? — Go to Step 5 Go to Step 3 3 1. Remove the IGN 1 fuse. 2. Inspect the fuse for an open. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems. Is the fuse open? — Go to Step 4 Go to Step 6 4 Important: The condition that affects this circuit may exist in other connecting branches of the circuit. Refer to Power Distribution Schematics in Wiring Systems for complete circuit distribution. Test the power feed circuit (CKT 1039) of the TCC brake switch for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems. Did you find and correct the condition? — Go to Step 9 — 5 1. Inspect the TCC brake switch for proper adjustment. 2. Adjust the TCC brake switch as necessary. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment in Hydraulic Brakes. Did the TCC brake switch require adjustment? — Go to Step 9 Go to Step 7 6 1. Test the power feed circuit (CKT 1039) of the TCC brake switch for an open. 2. Test the input circuit (CKT 420) of the TCC brake switch for an open.
