Manual A/C REMOVAL PROCEDURE CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 3. Remove the instrument panel storage compartment. 4. Disconnect the passenger side SIR. 5. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 6. Remove the left and right front speaker grilles. 7. Remove the center instrument panel sound insulator. 8. Remove the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 9. Disconnect the park brake release cable. 10. Remove the knee bolster. 11. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 12. Remove the BCM. 13. Disconnect the driver side SIR. 14. Remove the instrument panel cluster. 15. Remove the radio. 16. Remove the HVAC control assembly. 17. Remove the steering column retaining retaining nuts. 18. Lower the steering column. 19. Remove the instrument panel carrier. 20. Remove the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 21. Disconnect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 22. Remove the hood. 23. Remove the VCM. 24. Remove the coolant recovery tank. 25. Remove the heater hoses. 26. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the grille mounted lamps. 27. Remove the right front headlamp assembly. 28. Remove the front bumper. 29. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. 30. Disconnect the radio antenna cable. 31. Disconnect the electrical connector for the horn. 32. Remove the right fender. 33. Remove the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 34. Remove the blower motor resistor. 35. Remove the evaporator case bolts and screws. 36. Remove the accumulator. 37. Remove the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 38. Remove the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. 39. Pull back lightly on the heater case to remove the evaporator case. 40. Remove the evaporator case retaining screws. 41. Disassemble the evaporator case sections, and remove the evaporator core. NOTE: If replacing the evaporator core, remove the expansion (orofice) tube and install it into the new core. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Install the evaporator core. 2. Assemble the evaporator case sections. 3. Install the evaporator case retaining screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 in lb) . 4. Install the evaporator core assembly to the vehicle. 5. Install the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. Tighten the bolts to 4.5 N.m (40 lb in) . 6. Install the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 7. Install the accumulator. 1998 Chevy Truck S10/T10 Blazer 2WD 8. Install the evaporator case bolts and screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 In in) . 9. Install the blower motor resistor. 10. Install the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 11. Install the right fender. 12. Install the instrument panel carrier. 25. Reposition the the steering column, and install the steering column retaining nuts. 26. Install the HVAC control assembly. 27. Install the radio. 28. Install the instrument panel cluster. 29. Connect the driver side SIR. 30. Install the BCM. 31. Install the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 32. Install the knee bolster. 33. Connect the park brake release cable. 34. Install the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 35. Install the center instrument panel sound insulator. 36. Install the left and right front speaker grilles. 37. Install the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 38. Connect the passenger side SIR. 39. Install the instrument panel storage compartment. 40. Install the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 41. Connect the negative battery cable. 42. Inspect the system for leaks.

TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove resonator from throttle body. Remove air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle. 4. Support engine assembly from above with Support Fixture (J-28467-B). See Fig. 1 . Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 2 . 5. Remove power steering hose clamp bolt, and position hose away from timing belt cover. Remove front timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 4 . Align camshaft sprocket timing marks with notches on valve cover. See Fig. 5 . 7. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. Use an Allen wrench to rotate tensioner and relieve tension on timing belt. See Fig. 6 . Install the timing belt. See Fig. 7 . Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise to tension the timing belt. Turn tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch on the rear timing belt cover. Tighten automatic tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Ensure timing belt tensioner pointer is still aligned with notch. 3. If timing belt tensioner is correctly aligned, install timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Install the engine mount bracket on the timing belt end of engine. Position power steering hose in place, and install clamp bolt. Install crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine accessory drive belt. 4. Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. Install air filter housing and resonator.

1. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY (a) Align the pulley set key with the key groove of the timing pulley and slide on the timing pulley. (b) Slide on the timing pulley, facing the flange side inward. 2. INSTALL NO. 1 IDLER PULLEY AND NO.2 IDLER PULLEY (a) Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install the No.1 idler pulley with the plate washer and bolt. Torque: 35 N·m (350 kgf·cm, 26 ft·lbf) (b) Check that the pulley bracket moves smoothly. (c) Install the No.2 idler pulley with the bolt. Torque: 40 N·m (400 kgf·cm, 30 ft·lbf) (d) Check that the pulley moves smoothly. 3. TEMPORARILY INSTALL TIMING BELT NOTICE: The engine should be cold. (a) Use the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the crankshaft and align the timing marks on the crankshaft timing pulley and on the oil pump body. (b) Remove any oil or water on the crankshaft timing pulley, idler pulley and water pump pulley, and keep them clean. NOTICE: Only wipe the pulleys; do not use any cleansing agent. (c) Align the installation mark on the timing belt with the drilled mark of the crankshaft timing pulley. (d) Install the timing belt on the crankshaft timing pulley, No.1 idler and water pump pulleys. 4. INSTALL TIMING BELT GUIDE Install the guide, facing the cup side outward

Removal 1. Remove radiator shroud, cooling fan and pulley. Remove all drive belts and crankshaft pulleys. Remove upper timing belt covers and gaskets. Note bolt length and location. 2. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt and washer. Rotate crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with mark on cylinder head. See Fig. 5 . 3. Loosen timing belt tensioner adjustment bolt, and move tensioner toward water pump. Tighten bolt to secure tensioner. Remove front timing belt and tensioner. DO NOT rotate crankshaft after timing belt has been removed. 4. Remove camshaft sprocket (if necessary). Remove oil pump sprocket access plug from cylinder block. See Fig. 4 . Insert a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver to block left silent shaft. 5. Remove oil pump sprocket nut, and remove sprocket. Remove front crankshaft sprocket and flange. Note direction and order of installation for reassembly reference. 6. Remove rear timing belt tensioner assembly. Remove rear timing belt. Remove right silent shaft sprocket with spacer (if necessary). Remove rear crankshaft sprocket with key Installation 1. Install rear crankshaft sprocket and flange. Install right silent shaft sprocket and spacer. Spacer should be installed with chamfered end into oil seal. Align timing marks. See Fig. 5 . 2. Install rear tensioner. Hold tensioner tightly against belt while tightening bolts. Ensure deflection is .20- .28″ (5.0-7.1 mm). See Fig. 6 . Install camshaft sprocket. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 3. Install front timing belt tensioner, tension spring and spacer. Ensure spring is properly engaged against water pump case. Rotate tensioner toward water pump, and temporarily tighten bolts. Ensure timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 5 . Install timing belt on crankshaft. 4. Apply pressure on tension side of timing belt while installing belt (in order) on crankshaft, oil pump and camshaft sprockets. Loosen tensioner to apply spring pressure to timing belt. 5. To apply tension to belt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing mark is offset by 2 teeth. Tighten tensioner bolt. Tighten tensioner spacer nut

TIMING BELT REMOVAL 1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT 2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER DUCT 4. REMOVE DRIVE BELT, FAN WITH FLUID COUPLING AND WATER PUMP PULLEY (See step 5 in water pump removal in Cooling System) 5. REMOVE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY (See steps 5 and 6 in radiator removal in Cooling System) 6. REMOVE NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER (a) Remove the oil filler cap. (b) Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 6 bolts and belt cover. 7. REMOVE NO.2 TIMING BELT COVER Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 3 bolts, belt cover and gasket. If you are unable to loosen the bolt on the right because the PS pump pulley interferes with the hexagon wrench, first remove the pulley as follows. (a) Using SST to hold the pulley, remove the nut. SST 09960-10010 (b) Remove the pulley. 8. REMOVE DRIVE BELT TENSIONER Remove the 3 bolts and tensioner. – ENGINE ENGINE MECHANICAL EG-19 9. SET NO.1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION (a) Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark “0″ of the No.1 timing belt cover. NOTICE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise. (b) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys are aligned with the timing marks of the No.4 timing belt cover. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360?). 10. REMOVE TIMING BELT FROM CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEYS HINT (Re-using timing belt): Place matchmarks on the timing belt and camshaft timing pulleys as shown in the illustration. (a) Alternately loosen the 2 bolts, and remove them, the tensioner and dust boot. (b) Disconnect the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulleys. 11. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEYS Using SST, remove the bolt for the timing pulley. Remove both timing pulleys. SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) 12. Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Place wooden block between jack and oil pan, and raise engine slightly. Remove engine mount assembly near timing belt cover. 2. Remove clamp for power steering return hose near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket. See Fig. 1 . Remove power steering and water pump pulleys. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove crankshaft pulley. 3. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket. Remove stub bolt of engine support bracket, and remove center timing belt cover. Remove lower timing belt cover. 4. Ensure camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprocket timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Move tensioner to relieve timing belt tension. Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. See Fig. 1 . 5. Remove plug from left side of cylinder block. Install a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver into the hole against balance shaft. See Fig. 4 . Screwdriver must go in at least 2.36″ (60 mm) or more. If screwdriver will only go in about .79-.98″ (20-25 mm) before striking balance shaft, turn sprocket one revolution and align timing mark. Keep screwdriver in place until timing belt is installed. This ensures balance shaft driven by oil pump sprocket remains in correct position. 6. To remove timing belt “B” (balance shaft belt), hold crankshaft sprocket stationary with a spanner wrench. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using gear puller, remove outer crankshaft sprocket. 7. Remove crankshaft sensing blade (if equipped). See Fig. 5 . Loosen timing belt “B” tensioner bolt. If reusing timing belt “B”, mark direction of belt rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt “B Inspection 1. Inspect timing belts for damaged teeth and cracking. Ensure belts are not contaminated with oil. Check tensioners for free rotation and grease leakage. Replace components if damaged or if grease leakage exists. 2. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Hold timing belt auto tensioner upright. Measure rod protrusion above edge of housing. See Fig. 6 . Length should be .47″ (12 mm). Apply 22-44 lbs. (10-20 kg) of force to end of rod. If auto tensioner rod moves more than 0.39″ (1 mm), replace the auto tensioner.

Timing Belt Replacement TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT Removal Procedure ^ Tools Required -J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit -J 42098 Crank Hub Torx Socket Notice: Failure to follow the described timing belt inspection and maintenance may result in a broken timing belt and cause severe engine damage. 1.Inspect the cold start counter (also called a heavy duty register) with a scan tool. If there are any cold starts (below -28° C or -20° F) visually inspect the timing belt for cracks. It cracks are noted, do not reuse the belt. Replace the belt and clear the cold start counter. If the belt is okay, and is reused, do not clear the cold start counter. 2.Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management. 3.Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement. 4.Remove the timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement. 5.Remove the crankshaft balancer bolts. 6.Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft sprocket. 7.Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) 8.Install the J 42069-10 to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt. 9.Use the J 42098 to carefully turn the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction (clockwise) until the lever of the J 42069-10 firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange. 10.Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Important: Ensure that the crankshaft is not 180 degrees off TDC. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover at this point. If they are not aligned, the engine is 180 degrees off. 11.Install the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 to the camshaft gears. If the J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 do not fit into the teeth of the camshaft gears, it may be necessary to loosen the relevant timing belt idler pulley and turn the cam until the J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 can be inserted. Notice: After timing belt is removed, never turn camshaft and crankshaft independently. If turned, interference may occur among pistons and valves, and parts related to pistons and valves may be damaged. 12.Loosen the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys. Important: Do not remove J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 while the belt is removed. 13.Remove the timing belt. Aligning Timing Marks (2001-02 Montero) Courtesy of MITSUBISHI MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA. Installation (2001-02 Montero) 1. Place auto-tensioner in soft-jawed vise to SLOWLY compress the push rod. If there is a plug at the base of the auto-tensioner body, place flat washer around plug so it will not contact vise jaw. 2. Slowly compress auto-tensioner push rod until holes in push rod and auto-tensioner housing are aligned. Insert a locking pin into the alignment holes. Install auto-tensioner on engine. 3. Ensure all timing marks are still aligned. See Fig. 11 . Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, left bank camshaft sprocket, water pump pulley, right bank camshaft sprocket, and tensioner CAUTION: Never compress the auto-tensioner too fast, or the push rod will be damaged. WARNING: Right bank camshaft can easily turn from applied spring pressure. Be careful not to pinch fingers when installing timing belt. 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited MITSUBISHI 3.5L V6 – SOHC many waters gallery pulley. Take all slack out of timing belt. 4. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767), rotate tensioner pulley against timing belt. Temporarily tighten tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Crankshaft Pulley Spacer (MD998769), turn crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Turn crankshaft 1/4 turn clockwise. Ensure all timing belt marks are still aligned. 5. Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Position tensioner pin holes at bottom of tensioner. Install Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767) on tensioner pulley. See Fig. 12 . Using torque wrench, apply 39 INCH lbs. (4.4 N.m) of torque (counterclockwise direction) to tensioner pulley. Tighten tensioner center bolt to specification while holding tensioner pulley stationary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 6. Remove locking pin from auto-tensioner. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise and align all timing marks. DO NOT rotate counterclockwise. 7. Wait for at least 5 minutes, then check auto-tensioner push rod protrusion. To check push rod protrusion, measure clearance between body of auto-tensioner and bottom of tensioner pulley bracket arm. Clearance should be 0.15-0.20″ (3.8-5.0 mm). If protrusion is not correct, repeat timing belt tensioning procedure. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. 8. Install timing belt covers. See Fig. 10 . Install crankshaft pulley. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install accessory mount assembly on front of engine. See Fig. 13 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedures. See Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 . Adjust drive belts to proper tension. 9. When filling cooling system, use 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Open bleed screw on top of thermostat housing. Slowly fill cooling system until coolant flows out of bleed hole. Install bleed screw. Start engine and run to normal operating temperature. Race engine to 3000 RPM several times. Stop engine. After engine cools, refill radiator and coolant reservoir tank.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Using 16-mm spanner wrench, rotate serpentine belt tension arm clockwise about 14 degrees to relieve belt tension. Remove serpentine drive belt. Remove power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 . 2. Ensure timing marks of camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover are matching. See Fig. 5 . On Sedona, support engine with jack and remove engine mounting insulator. On all models, remove auto tensioner. See Fig. 3 . 3. Unbolt timing belt tensioner pulley, and remove timing belt. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Rotate crankshaft clockwise and align timing mark to set No. 1 cylinder to TDC on compression stroke. NOTE: If timing belt is to be reused, mark rotational direction on belt for reinstallation reference. CAUTION: If either camshaft is set at TDC for cylinder No. 1 at the compression stroke and the corresponding camshaft on the same cylinder head is rotated 180 degrees while the timing belt is removed, intake and exhaust valves may contact each other Inspection Inspect timing belt for wear on edges of drive teeth. Inspect the belt for signs of oil contamination, cracks, separation, worn or missing teeth, or hardened Black surface. Replace belt if worn, damaged or contaminated. Inspect belt tensioner pulley for smooth rotation. Replace if defective. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Replace if necessary. Installation 1. Install timing belt idler pulley to engine support lower bracket. Install tensioner arm, shaft and washer to cylinder block. Tighten tensioner arm bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Install crankshaft sprocket and align timing mark. See Fig. 4 . Install camshaft sprocket and adjust installation positions as shown. See Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 . INSTALL CHAIN TENSIONER SLIPPER a. Install the chain tensioner slipper with the bolt. Torque: 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) Zoom Sized for Print 36. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN GUIDE a. Install the timing chain guide with the bolt. Torque: 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) Zoom Sized for Print 37. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE NO.1 a. Install the sensor plate with the “F” mark facing forward. 38. INSTALL TIMING GEAR CASE OR TIMING CHAIN CASE OIL SEAL a. Apply multipurpose grease to a new oil seal lip. NOTICE: Keep the lip free of foreign objects. Zoom Sized for Print b. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the new oil seal until its surface is flush with the timing chain cover edge. SST 09223-22010 39. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN OR BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY a. Remove any old packing material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover, cylinder head and cylinder block. Zoom Sized for Print b. Apply a continuous bead of seal packing (Diameter 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) ) as shown in the illustration. Seal packing: Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent Zoom Sized for Print NOTICE: • Remove any oil from the contact surface. • Install the chain cover within 3 minutes of applying seal packing. • Do not put in engine oil for at least 2 hours after installing the chain cover. c. Apply a continuous bead of seal packing as shown in the illustration. Seal packing: Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent NOTICE: • Remove any oil from the contact surface. • Install the chain cover within 3 minutes of applying seal packing. • Do not put in engine oil for at least 2 hours after installing the chain cover.
